Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Courses typically have either 18 or 9 ''holes'', regions of terrain that each contain a ''cup'', the hole that receives the ball. Each hole on a course contains a teeing ground to start from, and a putting green containing the cup. There are several standard forms of terrain between the tee and the green, such as the fairway, rough (tall grass), and various ''hazards'' such as water, rocks, or sand-filled ''bunkers''. North Texas LPGA Shootout
The Volunteers of America Classic is a women's professional golf tournament in Texas on the LPGA Tour. It debuted in April 2013 at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, northwest of downtown Dallas. Volunteers of America, the title sponsor, is a faith-based nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing and other assistance, primarily to low-income people, throughout the United States. Inbee Park won the inaugural event, one stroke ahead of Carlota Ciganda, and became its first multiple winner in 2015. In between, Stacy Lewis won by six strokes in 2014 and set the tournament record at 268 (−16). Byron Nelson Championship
The AT&T Byron Nelson is a golf tournament in Texas on the PGA Tour, currently hosted by TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, northeast of Dallas. Held in May, it is one of two PGA Tour stops in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex – which until the 2020-21 PGA Tour, was the only metropolitan area to host two events on separate courses in the area ( Las Vegas, Nevada and Savannah, Georgia have since hosted two events on two separate courses). The tournament is the leading fundraiser for charity on the PGA Tour and has raised more than $143 million. For much of its history, it was the only PGA Tour stop named after a professional golfer, and remains one of only two such events, along with the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Crowne Plaza Invitational At Colonial
The Colonial National Invitation, titled for sponsorship reasons as the Charles Schwab Challenge since 2019, is a professional golf tournament in Texas on the PGA Tour, played annually in May in Fort Worth at Colonial Country Club, which organizes the event. It is one of five invitational tournaments on the PGA Tour; the inaugural event was held in 1946. The Dell Technologies Championship was a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour in Norton, Massachusetts, United States, held annually in late summer over the Labor Day weekend. The 2018 edition was the last time the event was staged as the FedEx Cup was reduced from four to three Playoff events in 2019. Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic
The Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic was a women's professional golf tournament in California on the LPGA Tour, held at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, an adjacent suburb south of San Francisco. It debuted in April 2014, but ran for just three years, the LPGA Mediheal Championship succeeded it in 2018, also played at Lake Merced. Course history Originally designed by Willie Locke, Lake Merced Golf Club opened in July 1923 and was re-designed in 1929 by Alister MacKenzie, architect of the Augusta National Golf Club. Robert Muir Graves re-routed the course in the 1960s to accommodate Interstate 280, and the most recent revision was completed by Rees Jones in 1996. TPC Stonebrae Championship
The Ellie Mae Classic was a golf tournament on the Korn Ferry Tour. It was first played in 2009 at TPC Stonebrae (previously known as Stonebrae Country Club), in Hayward, California. The inaugural event had a prize fund of $600,000 with $108,000 going to the winner, Australian Michael Sim who shot a final round 64 to triumph by 6 strokes. The 2010 event had the same purse and American Kevin Chappell won his first Nationwide Tour event. Daniel Chopra of Sweden won the 2011 event, shortened to 54 holes after fog delayed and then canceled the fourth round. The event was not played in 2013 due to construction of a new clubhouse, but returned in 2014. Safeway Open
The Fortinet Championship, previously the Safeway Open, is a professional golf tournament, part of the PGA Tour. Originally sponsored by Fry's Electronics, it was first staged in 2007 as the Fry's Electronics Open at Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was renamed to the Frys.com Open in 2008 and moved to California in 2010, to CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, southeast of San Jose.
