List Of Prisons In Canada
This is a list of prisons and other secure correctional facilities in Canada, not including local jails. In Canada, all offenders who receive a sentence of 24 months or greater must serve their sentence in a federal correctional facility administered by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). Any offender who receives a sentence less than 24 months, or who is incarcerated while awaiting trial or sentencing, must serve their sentence in a provincial/territorial correctional facility. Members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are sentenced under military law serve their sentences at detention barracks designated by the Department of National Defence. For inmates with serious mental health conditions, CSC has 5 regional treatment centres. In addition, CSC also provides healing lodges specifically for Indigenous offenders, designed with the intention "to address factors that led to their incarceration and prepare them for reintegration into society." Grand Valley Institution For Women
Grand Valley Institution for Women (GVI; french: Établissement pour femmes Grand Valley) is a women's prison in Kitchener, Ontario, operated by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). In Canada, all offenders sentenced to prison terms of greater than two years serve their time in a federal institution operated by the CSC. The Grand Valley Institution, which had a reported capacity of approximately 130 women as of April 2010, is the only federal women's prison in Ontario. History The prison opened in 1997. Penetanguishene
Penetanguishene , sometimes shortened to Penetang, is a town in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the southeasterly tip of Georgian Bay. Incorporated on February 22, 1882, this bilingual (French and English) community has a population of 8,962 in the Canada 2016 Census. The name ''Penetanguishene'' is believed to come from either the Wyandot or Abenaki via Ojibwe, meaning "land of the white rolling sands". The Central North Correctional Centre formerly known as "The Superjail" is a maximum security prison located in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Canada. During its period of private management from 2001 to 2006, it was the only privately-run adult correctional facility in Canada. Brockville, formerly Elizabethtown, is a city in Eastern Ontario, Canada, in the Thousand Islands region. Brockville Jail
The Brockville Jail is a jail in Brockville, Ontario operated by the provincial Ministry of the Solicitor General. It is the oldest operational jail in the province. On August 27, 2020 the Government of Ontario announced funding for a new facility to replace the Brockville Jail as part of a larger project to renovate and replace prisons in eastern Ontario. Algoma Treatment And Remand Centre
The Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre (formerly Northern Treatment Centre) is a medium/maximum security prison located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada. The entire centre has a capacity of 104 beds. Treatment Centre As a Treatment Centre, it provides "specialized and intensive treatment for motivated offenders with clearly identified problems relating to substance abuse, sexual misconduct, impulse control and anger management." The centre is divided into two sections, the treatment centre and the remand centre, which acts as the local correctional centre.
