The following is a list of people executed by the U.S. state of Arkansas since 1976, when the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in the United States. 31 people have been executed in Arkansas since 1976: 30 males and 1 female ( Christina Marie Riggs). All but John Swindler (who was executed by electric chair) were executed by lethal injection. All were executed for the crime of murder. Arkansas
Arkansas ( ) is a landlocked state in the South Central United States. It is bordered by Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, and Texas and Oklahoma to the west. Its name is from the Osage language, a Dhegiha Siouan language, and referred to their relatives, the Quapaw people. Barry Lee Fairchild (March 5, 1954 in Little Rock, Arkansas – August 31, 1995) was an American convicted kidnapper, rapist, and murderer. Kenneth Williams (serial Killer)
Kenneth Dewayne Williams (February 23, 1979 – April 27, 2017) was an American serial killer who killed four people in Arkansas and Missouri. Originally sentenced to life without parole in Arkansas for killing a cheerleader in 1998, Williams escaped from prison in a 500-gallon barrel of pig slop in 1999. He then shot and killed another man and stole his truck several miles away from the prison, before unintentionally killing another man in a police chase in Missouri. Williams was convicted of the murder he committed shortly after escaping prison and was sentenced to death. In 2005, he confessed to committing another murder in 1998. Williams became the last of four inmates executed in Arkansas in April 2017. Jack Harold Jones
Jack Harold Jones Jr. (August 10, 1964 – April 24, 2017) was an American serial killer who murdered at least three women in Florida and Arkansas between 1983 and 1995. Convicted of two murders during his lifetime and executed in 2017, he was posthumously linked via DNA to the third murder, for which another man was imprisoned. William Asa Hutchinson II (, '' AY-sə''; born December 3, 1950) is an American attorney, businessman, and politician who is the 46th and current governor of Arkansas. A member of the Republican Party, he was the U.S. attorney for the Fort Smith-based Western District of Arkansas from 1982 to 1985, U.S. representative for Arkansas's 3rd congressional district from 1997 to 2001, administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration from 2001 to 2003, and the first undersecretary for border and transportation security at the United States Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005. Ledell Lee
Ledell Lee (July 31, 1965 – April 20, 2017) was an American man convicted and executed for the 1993 murder of his neighbor, Debra Reese. He was convicted in 1995, and the Arkansas Supreme Court affirmed the conviction in 1997, but numerous questions have been raised about the justice of his trial and post-conviction representation. Issues have included conflict of interest for the judge, inebriation of counsel, and ineffective defense counsel. A request to postpone the execution in order to test DNA on the murder weapon was denied by a circuit judge. After Lee's execution, it was proven that the DNA on the murder weapon belonged to another person, an unknown male. Eric Nance
Eric Randall Nance (January 9, 1960 – November 28, 2005) was an American man who was convicted of murder in the state of Arkansas. Nance was executed in 2005. Murder On October 11, 1993, 18-year-old Julie Heath (June11, 1975–October11, 1993) was driving on U.S. Highway 270 between Malvern and Hot Springs, Arkansas, to visit her boyfriend in Hot Springs. Nance stated that he stopped to help Heath after her car broke down and offered her a ride to Malvern. The prosecution said that Nance then raped and murdered her. He was later seen in a convenience store wearing no shoes, socks, or shirt. According to the clerk, there appeared to be fresh dark, damp stains on his overalls. Heath's body was found on October 18, 1993, by a hunter. Her throat had been cut. Charles Laverne Singleton
Charles Laverne Singleton (March 29, 1959 – January 6, 2004) was an American convicted murderer, who, at the time of his execution, lived on death row in Arkansas longer than any other state inmate. He was executed in 2004 for the June 1, 1979, murder of 19-year-old Hamburg store owner Mary Lou York. Murder Mary Lou York was attacked in York's Grocery Store, of which she was the owner. She died in the hospital from loss of blood as a result of two stab wounds in her neck. The evidence of Charles Singleton's guilt was overwhelming. Patti Franklin (a relative of Singleton) and Lenora Howard, who were both witnesses at the scene, identified him as having attacked York. Riley Dobi Noel
Riley Dobi Noel (May 22, 1972 – July 9, 2003) was an American convicted murderer who was executed for the June 1995 murders of Marcell Young, Mustafa Hussian, and Malak Hussian in Varner, Arkansas. Murder On June 4, 1995, Noel, accompanied by Terry Carroll, Curtis Cochran, and Tracy Calloway, were out driving in Little Rock, Arkansas in Cochran's car while getting high on drugs. A week prior, Noel's brother had been killed in a drive-by shooting, and Noel believed that a daughter of a woman he knew was involved and had set up his brother. Seeking revenge, Noel and his acquaintances headed to the home of the woman; Mary Hussian. Once the group arrived at Hussian's home, Noel ordered three of Hussian's children to get down on the floor. Clay King Smith
Clay King Smith (July 25, 1970 – May 8, 2001) was an American mass murderer executed by the state of Arkansas for the March 25, 1998, murders of Misty Erwin (age 20), Shelley Sorg (24), Shelley's two children Sean Sorg (5) and Taylor Sorg (3), and babysitter Samantha Rhodes (12) at his home near Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Murders Smith's girlfriend, Misty Erwin, reported that Smith battered her and requested police assistance to move out of the house. However, when police arrived, she withdrew her complaint and decided to stay with Smith. Two days later, her body was found in the house along with a cousin, two small children, and a babysitter. David Dewayne Johnson
David Dewayne Johnson (January 10, 1963 – December 19, 2000) was an American murderer executed for the 1989 murder of Leon Brown, 67, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Murder On September 2, 1989, Johnson entered a warehouse and convinced the night watchman, 67-year-old Leon Brown, that he needed to use the telephone to get his car, a white Oldsmobile, out of a ditch nearby. Dudley Swann, the principal stockholder in Little Rock Crate and Basket identified Johnson as the driver of the white Oldsmobile. Swann had earlier asked Johnson to leave and come back the next day to get his car because he did not want the driver on the premises after dark.
