This is a list of open-access journals by field. The list contains notable journals which have a policy of full open access. It does not include delayed open access journals, hybrid open access journals, or related collections or indexing services. True open-access journals can be split into two categories: * diamond or platinum open-access journals, which charge no additional publication, open access or article processing fees * gold open-access journals, which charge publication fees (also called article processing charges, APCs). African Invertebrates
''African Invertebrates'' is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal that covers the taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, ecology, conservation, and palaeontology of Afrotropical invertebrates, whether terrestrial, freshwater, or marine. It is published by Pensoft Publishers on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum and the editor-in-chief is David G. Herbert (KwaZulu-Natal Museum). History The journal was established in 1906 as the ''Annals of the Natal Government Museum'' and after 1910 renamed to ''Annals of the Natal Museum''. In 1989, the journal stopped publishing archaeological and anthropological papers, which was split of to a new journal, the ''Natal Museum Journal of Humanities'' (later: ''Southern African Humanities''), while the ''Annals of the Natal Museum'' were restricted to the natural sciences. F1000Research
F1000 (formerly "Faculty of 1000") is an open research publisher for scientists, scholars, and clinical researchers. F1000 offers a different research evaluation service from standard academic journals by offering peer-review after, rather than before, publishing a research article. Initially, F1000 was named after the 1,000 faculty members that performed peer-reviews, but over time F1000 expanded to more than 8,000 members. When F1000 was acquired by Taylor & Francis Group in January 2020, it kept the publishing services. F1000Prime (AKA Faculty Opinions) and F1000 Workspace (AKA Sciwheel) were acquired by different brands. ELife
''eLife'' is a not-for-profit, peer-reviewed, open access, scientific journal for the biomedical and life sciences. It was established at the end of 2012 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Max Planck Society, and Wellcome Trust, following a workshop held in 2010 at the Janelia Farm Research Campus. Together, these organizations provided the initial funding to support the business and publishing operations. In 2016, the organizations committed US$26 million to continue publication of the journal. The current editor-in-chief is Michael Eisen (University of California, Berkeley). Editorial decisions are made largely by senior editors and members of the board of reviewing editors, all of whom are active scientists working in fields ranging from human genetics and neuroscience to biophysics, epidemiology, and ecology. ''Contributions to Zoology'' (formerly known as ''Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde'') is a scientific journal that started in 1848 as a publication of the Committee in charge of the library of the Dutch Royal Zoological Society "Natura Artis Magistra" and became integrated in the library of the University of Amsterdam in 1939. Since 2019 the journal is published by Brill publishers, Leiden. The journal has been freely available online since 1997. ''BMC Systems Biology'' was an open access peer-reviewed scientific journal that covered research in systems biology. Filling a gap in what was a new research field, the journal was established in 2007 and is published by BioMed Central. Part of the BMC Series of journals, it had a broad scope covering the engineering of biological systems, network modelling, quantitative analyses, integration of different levels of information and synthetic biology.
