The Irish Singles Chart is the Republic of Ireland's music industry standard singles popularity chart issued weekly by the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) and compiled on their behalf by the Official Charts Company. Chart rankings are based on sales, which are compiled through over-the-counter retail data captured electronically each day from retailers' EPOS systems. All major record shops, digital retailers and streaming services contribute to the chart, accounting for over 95% of the market. A new chart is compiled and officially released to the public by the Irish Recorded Music Association on Friday at noon. Each chart is dated with the "week-ending" date of the previous Thursday (i.e., the day before issue). The singles chart was first published on 1 October 1962, and covered the top ten singles of the previous week by record label shipments. "Mary's Boy Child / Oh My Lord" is a 1978 Christmas single by Boney M., a cover of Harry Belafonte's 1956 hit "Mary's Boy Child", put in medley with the new song "Oh My Lord". Gloria Smyth (born May 1951), better known as Gloria, is an Irish singer from Navan, County Meath. She rose to fame in Ireland during the 1970s with " One Day at a Time" which spent longer in the Irish charts than any other single to date (90 weeks). She later toured under her married name of Gloria Sherry. Career The eldest of nine children, Gloria's father, Jimmy, was the leader of the Arcadians Showband. Her first experience on stage was at the age of 10 when she danced and played accordion with her father's showband. After leaving school, she found work playing piano with another band, before joining the Maurice Lynch Showband as a singer in the late 1960s. Commodores are an American funk and soul band, which were at their peak in the late 1970s through the mid 1980s. The members of the group met as mostly freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1968, and signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for the Jackson 5 while on tour. The group's most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer. Clout (band)
Clout was, originally, an all-female South African rock group formed in Johannesburg in 1977, best known for their hit single, " Substitute". Later in their career, the group included some male musicians, who had played as session musicians on the recording. Career Clout's first and biggest hit, "Substitute", was a new arrangement of a Righteous Brothers song, composed by Willie Wilson. In 1978, their version reached No. 1 in South Africa, New Zealand, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Belgium. It also reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and remained in the UK charts for 15 weeks.
