Adult Contemporary is a chart published by '' Billboard'' ranking the top-performing songs in the United States in the adult contemporary music (AC) market. In 1979, 19 songs topped the chart, based on playlists submitted by radio stations. The chart was published under the title Easy Listening through the issue of ''Billboard'' dated March 31 and Adult Contemporary thereafter. On the first chart of the year, Scottish singer Al Stewart held the top spot with "Time Passages", which was in its ninth week at number one. The song would end its run at the top after ten weeks, the longest run at number one on the chart for more than ten years. Stewart had been a recording artist since the mid-1960s and would remain active for more than forty years, but his U.S. chart success was confined to a three-year period at the end of the 1970s. Orsa Lia
Orsa Lia, born in Virginia, is a singer. She recorded some jingles for television commercials in the 1970s before signing on with an upstart record label, Infinity Records, in the late 1970s. She is best known for the song, "I Never Said I Love You", which was written and produced by Hal David and Archie Jordan. David had been a longtime collaborator with Burt Bacharach on many well-known songs, most notably for singer Dionne Warwick. Country singer Barbara Mandrell recorded "I Never Said I Love You" on her 1976 lp "Midnight Angel". Although "I Never Said I Love You" only reached number 84 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 pop singles chart in April 1979, the song did spend one week at number one on the ''Billboard'' Adult Contemporary chart that same month. "Lotta Love" is a song written and recorded by Neil Young and released on his 1978 '' Comes a Time'' album. "Lotta Love" was also covered by Nicolette Larson in 1978. Larson's version reached No. 8 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart and No. 8 on the ''Cash Box'' Top 100 in February 1979. John David "J. D." Souther (born November 2, 1945) is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He has written and co-written songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. Herb Alpert (born March 31, 1935) is an American trumpeter who led the band Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass in the 1960s. During the same decade, he co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss. Alpert has recorded 28 albums that have landed on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart, five of which became No. 1 albums; he has had 14 platinum albums and 15 gold albums.
