Ze'ev Sherf
Ze'ev Sherf (; 21 April 1904 – 18 April 1984) was an Israeli politician who held several ministerial portfolios in the 1960s and 1970s. Biography Born in Czernowitz in Austria-Hungary (today Chernivtsi, Ukraine), Sherf emigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1925. He was a member of Poale Zion's youth movement, and was a founder of the "Socialist Youth" movement. During World War II he was a member of the Haganah command, and following the war worked for the Jewish Agency for Israel for two years. In 1947 he was appointed secretary of the Situation Committee, which helped create the administrative apparatus of the new state. Following independence, he served as secretary of the government until 1957. In the 1965 elections he was voted into the Knesset on the Alignment list. In November 1966 he was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry, and in August 1968 also became Minister of Finance. Yigal Allon
Yigal Allon (; 10 October 1918 – 29 February 1980) was an Israeli military leader and politician. He was a commander of the Palmach and a general in the Israel Defense Forces, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). He was also a leader of the Ahdut HaAvoda and Labor Party (Israel), Israeli Labor parties. He served briefly as acting Prime Minister of Israel between the death of Levi Eshkol and the appointment of Golda Meir in 1969. Allon was the first non-European-born Israeli to serve as Prime Minister of Israel (the first elected, non-European-born Prime Minister would later be Yitzhak Rabin in 1974). Reuven Barkat
Reuven Barkat (; 25 October 1906 – 5 April 1972) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment and the Labor Party from 1965 until his death in 1972. Biography Born Reuven Borstein in Tauragė in the Kovno Governorate of the Russian Empire (today in Lithuania), Barkat was educated in a heder and yeshiva, before attending the Jewish Gymnasium of Lithuania. He was amongst the founders of the Young Pioneer and Young Hebrew movements in the country. He later studied law and literature at the University of Paris and University of Strasbourg, and chaired the Union of Hebrew Students. In 1926 he made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine. Moshe Dayan
Moshe Dayan (; May 20, 1915 – October 16, 1981) was an Israeli military leader and politician. As commander of the Jerusalem front in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, Chief of General Staff (Israel), Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (1953–1958) during the 1956 Suez Crisis, Sinai War, and as Defense Minister during the Six-Day War in 1967, he became a worldwide fighting symbol of the new state of Israel. In the 1930s, Dayan joined the Haganah, the pre-state Jewish defense force of Mandatory Palestine. Yitzhak Navon
Yitzhak Rachamim Navon (; 9 April 1921 – 6 November 2015) was an Israeli politician, diplomat, playwright, and author. He served as the president of Israel between 1978 and 1983 as a member of the centre-left Alignment party. He was the first Israeli president born in Jerusalem and the first Sephardi Jew to serve in that office. Biography Navon was born in Jerusalem to Yosef and Miryam Navon, a descendant of a Sephardi Jewish family of rabbis, and had ancestry in Jerusalem going back centuries. Avraham Ofer
Avraham Ofer (; 1922 as Avraham Hirsch – 3 January 1977) was an Israeli politician, famous for committing suicide following the eruption of a corruption scandal. Biography Ofer was born in the Chorostków shtetl in Poland (today in Ukraine) in 1922, and immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1933. He went to High School in Jerusalem and studied in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1937 he joined the Haganah and in 1942 he was among the founders of Kibbutz Hamadia. Pinchas Sapir (; born Pinchas Kozlowski 15 October 1906 – 12 August 1975) was an Israeli politician during the first three decades following the country's founding. He held two important ministerial posts, Minister of Finance (1963–68 and 1969–74) and Minister of Trade and Industry (1955–65 and 1970–72) as well as several other high-ranking governmental posts. For many years, he served as the Secretary General of Mapai or the Labor Party. Dov Zakin
Dov Zakin (; 29 September 1922 – 4 September 1986) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment and Mapam between 1969 and 1977 and again from 1981 to 1984. Biography Zakin was born in Baranavichy in Poland (now in Belarus). He emigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1937, where he was educated at the Ben Shemen Youth Village, before studying political science and economics at Tel Aviv University. In 1945 he was amongst the founders of kibbutz Lehavot HaBashan. In 1946 he helped found the Wadi Ara branch of the Eretz Yisrael Workers Union. Mordechai Ofer
Mordechai Ofer (; 20 February 1924 – 1 September 1971) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment and Labor Party from 1965 until his death in 1971. Biography Born in Kraków in Poland in 1924, Ofer emigrated to Mandatory Palestine the following year. He joined the Mandate-era Jewish Police force and served in the IDF during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. After being demobilized in 1950 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he began working for Egged. Mordechai Bibi
Mordechai Bibi (; 1 July 1922 – 5 February 2023) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Ahdut HaAvoda and its successors between 1959 and 1974. Biography Born in Baghdad in Iraq, Bibi was one of the founders of the Pioneering Zionist Underground movement in Iraq in 1942. Between 1944 and 1945 he directed the Aliyah Committee in Iraq on behalf of Mossad LeAliyah Bet. In 1945 Bibi himself emigrated to Mandatory Palestine and was involved in helping with mass immigration from Iraq between 1949 and 1950. He also studied law at Tel Aviv University and was certified as a lawyer. From 1953 until 1959 Bibi worked for the Ministry of Defense.
