Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Depending on the system chosen, a mayor may be the chief executive officer of the municipal government, may simply chair a multi-member governing body with little or no independent power, or may play a solely ceremonial role. A mayor's duties and responsibilities may be to appoint and oversee municipal managers and employees, provide basic governmental services to constituents, and execute the laws and ordinances passed by a municipal governing body (or mandated by a state, territorial or national governing body). Simon Snyder (mayor)
Simon Snyder (March 31, 1846 – 1902) was a business owner and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Waterloo from 1895 to 1897. Born in Bloomingdale, Canada West, he began work as a store clerk in Conestogo. Dorothy McCabe
Dorothy McCabe (born c. 1969) is a Canadian politician. She has served as the mayor of Waterloo, Ontario since 2022. As mayor, she also serves on Waterloo Regional Council. Early life McCabe is originally from Arthur, Ontario. She is the daughter of Terry McCabe and Stella Mulhall. McCabe attended Wilfrid Laurier University where she received a bachelor's degree in Communications and History. While attending Laurier, she was a member of the Laurier Golden Hawks varsity women's basketball team. David Jaworsky (born 1964) is a Canadian politician and former BlackBerry executive. He was the mayor of Waterloo, Ontario from 2014 to 2022. As mayor, he also served on Waterloo Regional Council. Brenda Halloran
Brenda Halloran is a former mayor of Waterloo, Ontario. She was first elected in the 2006 municipal election, defeating incumbent mayor Herb Epp and former mayor Brian Turnbull. She was re-elected in 2010. Personal Halloran was born in Hamilton, Ontario to James 'Jim' (July 6, 1929 - April 21, 2005) and Doreen Halloran, as the first of three children. Her two younger brothers Michael and Jeffrey are an engineer and a small business owner respectively. The family settled in Waterloo in 1964, three years after the youngest son, Jeffrey, was born. Lynne Elizabeth Woolstencroft (September 23, 1943 – May 13, 2013) was a Canadian politician and former mayor of Waterloo, Ontario. Life and career Woolstencroft was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She held a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary and a Master of Arts from Central Michigan University. She was married to Peter Woolstencroft, a university administrator and professor of political science at the University of Waterloo. She taught a wide range of classes, from advanced Shakespeare classes in high schools to basic literacy and life skills courses for adult learners. Marjorie Carroll
Marjorie Carroll (née Monk) was a former nurse and politician in Ontario, Canada. She served as the first female, and longest-serving mayor of Waterloo from 1977 to 1988. Biography Carroll was born October 8, 1932, in Bruce County, Ontario. She grew up on a farm near Elmwood, Ontario. She was educated at the Kitchener-Waterloo School of Nursing and studied public health nursing at the University of Western Ontario. She worked as a nurse in Toronto, where she met her husband, Glenn Carroll, with whom she had two daughters. Carroll worked on campaigns for the federal and provincial Progressive Conservatives. Herb Epp
Herbert Arnold Epp (August 31, 1934 – February 25, 2013) was a politician from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal from 1977 to 1990 and was a former three-term mayor of the City of Waterloo. Background Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Ontario, Epp studied political science and history and received his BA degree from Waterloo Lutheran University in 1961. He went on to receive a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto in 1972. Epp worked as a teacher and guidance counsellor for fifteen years with the Waterloo County Board of Education and worked occasionally as a supply teacher after finishing his career in provincial politics. Wilfred L Hilliard (1896 – 1965) was a Canadian actuary and politician in Ontario. He served as mayor of Waterloo from 1947 to 1948. He was the son of Doctor William L. Albert Heer
Albert R. Heer (January 28, 1891 – 1972) was a building contractor and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Waterloo from 1944 to 1946. Heer was born in Petersburg, Ontario and was educated in Woolwich and in Waterloo. He first worked as a carpenter and set up a contracting business when he moved to Waterloo. Heer served in the army during World War I. He was a member of Waterloo council from 1931 to 1938, ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1939 and then served on Waterloo council from 1941 to 1943 and again from 1949 to 1950. Louis Dietrich
Louis Frederick Dietrich (September 13, 1868 – June 11, 1947) was an automobile dealer and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Waterloo from 1929 to 1930. Life and career Dietrich was born to German-Canadian parents Gregor Dietrich (1842—1906) and Emelia Doll (1843—1913) in St. Agatha. William George Weichel
William George "Billy" Weichel (July 20, 1870 – May 2, 1949) was a merchant and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Waterloo North in the House of Commons of Canada from 1911 to 1917 as a Conservative member and in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1923 to 1929. Biography He was born in Elmira, Ontario, the son of Michael Weichel, who came to Canada from Hesse, Germany, and Margaret Schmidt. Weichel was educated in Elmira and Berlin (later Kitchener). He worked eight years as a clerk in his father's hardware store before becoming a salesman for a saw manufacturer in Galt.
