Charles Poncet De Brétigny
Charles Poncet de Brétigny ( – 1644) was founder and governor of the French colony of Cayenne, in what is now French Guiana, from 1644 to 1645. A brutal and despotic man, after just over a year he was murdered by a Carib, as were most of the other colonists. Accounts of the events and aftermath are somewhat confused, gathered from the few survivors several years later. Life Charles Poncet, seigneur de Brétigny was born around 1610. Poncet de Brétigny was appointed admiral, lieutenant-general of King Louis XIII of France and head of the Compagnie de Rouen( fr). Poncet de Brétigny led a group of colonists to Cayenne for the company, also called the Compagnie du Cap au nord. His objective was to found new settlements at Cap Nord and on the Maroni River. Gilbert Guillouet D'Orvilliers
Gilbert Guillouet, seigneur d'Orvilliers ( – 11 May 1764) was a French soldier who was commander of French Guiana from 1730 to 1763, and governor of French Guiana from 1749 to 1763. At the time the colony was struggling for survival, dependent on slave labour to extract sugar and other products. Family The Guillouet d’Orvilliers family was from the Bourbonnais region. The family made strategic marriages with the most efficient military families of Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, and the French colonies in America. Gilbert's grandfather, Rémy Guillouet, seigneur d'Orvilliers, married Marie Lefèvre de La Barre, daughter of Antoine Lefèbvre de La Barre, first governor of Cayenne in the 17th century. Louis-Thomas Jacau de Fiedmont (sometimes Jacault or Jacob) ( – 25 August 1788) was a Canadian artillery officer. Jacau joined the French army as a non-commissioned officer and became a cadet in 1743 in the gunners of Île Royale. He traveled to France and, in 1747, was captured by the British. In 1748 he was promoted to ensign and returned to Canada in 1750. In 1753 he was promoted to lieutenant and given command of the artillery in Acadia. In 1757 he was promoted to captain. In 1760 he was a made a knight of the Order of Saint Louis. In 1762 Jacau was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and sent to French Guiana and in 1765 was appointed governor of that colony.
