Annai, Guyana
Annai is an Amerindian village in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo Region of Guyana. Annai stands at an altitude of 95 metres (314 feet), at the edge of the Rupununi savannah, where the cattle trail to the Atlantic coast begins. It is nestled in the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains, and is close to the Rupununi River. Annai, considered to be the gateway to the Rupununi, is approximately north of Karanambo and is by road from the nation's capital, Georgetown. Much of the population of the area are members of the Macushi people. Annai is one of the northernmost Macushi Amerindian villages in the North Rupununi Savannahs. It is mainly an agriculture community living on cassava and peanut farming, and cattle ranching. Buxton, Guyana
Buxton is a village in the Demerara-Mahaica Region of Guyana, standing about midway between Georgetown and Enmore. History Buxton Village was founded in 1840 by a group of freed Afro-Guyanese, who purchased the former Plantation New Orange Nassau, and named it after Fowell Buxton. Better Hope
Better Hope is a village located in the Demerara-Mahaica region of Guyana. The village has been named after the Plantation Betterhoop It was originally a fishing village with many working on the sugar estates and nearby farms. The majority of the population is Indo-Guyanese with a minority of Afro-Guyanese. In 2018, a road was named in honor of Moses Dwarka, a competitive marathoner born in the town. Beterverwagting
Beterverwagting, also Betterverwagting or abbreviated to B.V., is a village in Guyana, on the East Coast of the Demerara River. History On 8 May 1839, 62 former slaves pooled their savings together and bought plantation Beterverwagting from Baron van Groningen. In 1842, Triumph was established to the east, Triumph and Beterverwagting have grown together, and are often referred to as Beterverwagting/Triumph. Both villages are under the same local government. Beterverwagting is located roughly 10 miles from the capital, Georgetown, and is an important feeder village for the sugar estate in La Bonne Intention, a village adjacent to it. The name Beterverwagting comes from the Dutch words "Beter verwachting", literally "better expectation". Belladrum
Belladrum is a small community in the Mahaica-Berbice Region of Guyana, on the Atlantic coast, about east of Mahaicony. Geography Belladrum is a rural area close to the sea wall on the northern coast of Guyana. It is below sea level and is rich with lush vegetation, rice fields, and wildlife. Due to frequent seasonal flooding, it is particularly good for growing rice. Housing and employment Housing is traditionally made of wood and stands on stilt-like columns. Recently houses made of concrete and breeze bloc are becoming more common. The people of Belladrum are very friendly and walk long distances in search of work. Historically the men of Belladrum would walk for miles daily to "dig shovel", digging canals and waterways in the cane fields or "cut cane" at the Bath or Blairmont sugar plantations. Baramita
Baramita, is a community in the Barima-Waini region of northern Guyana, standing about 20 miles west of Matthew's Ridge, at an altitude of 99 metres (328 feet). It is one of the largest Amerindian settlements in the country. It is inhabited by the Kalina people. and the village council is responsible for 22 satellite villages as well. Baracara
Baracara was founded as a maroon community in the East Berbice-Corentyne Region of Guyana, located on the Canje River. The community has also been called New Ground Village or Wel te Vreeden. Baracara is 20 miles west of Corriverton and just north of the Torani Canal's connection to the Canje River. Overview Baracara is the only maroon village in Guyana. A group of escaped slaves settled in Baracara in the early 19th century, and occupied both the east and west banks of the river. The demographics are mostly Afro-Guyanese. The economy of the village is based on subsistence farming and logging. The village has a health centre, and a primary school, but no secondary school. Baracara can be only accessed by boat from the river. As of 2015, the village has no local government. In 2018, the village received access to the telephone network and Internet. Assakata
Assakata or Asakata is a village in Barima-Waini region, in the north of Guyana. Assakata is an Amerindian village inhabited by Warao and Arawak people, located in the swamps and marshes between the Barima and Pomeroon River. History Assakata was founded in 1938 as the Assakata mission, and is part of the North West Amerindian District. Since 1996, the area is governed by the Moruca Land Council with Santa Rosa as the main settlement. The population as of 2013 is approximately 300 people spread over four settlements.
