Bank robbery is the criminal act of stealing from a bank, specifically while bank employees and customers are subjected to force, violence, or a threat of violence. This refers to robbery of a bank branch or teller, as opposed to other bank-owned property, such as a train, armored car, or (historically) stagecoach. It is a federal crime in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, robbery is "the taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence or by putting the victim in fear." Perth Mint Swindle
The Perth Mint Swindle is the popular name for the robbery of 49 gold bars weighing from the Perth Mint in Western Australia on 22 June 1982. The bullion was valued at A$653,000 at that time (2011:$2.02 million). , the value of the of gold would approach AUD $3.7 million. According to police at the time, three brothers, Ray, Peter and Brian Mickelberg, orchestrated the robbery. The three went to trial and were found guilty of the conspiracy and sentenced in 1983 to twenty, sixteen and twelve years in jail respectively. All three convictions were overturned in 2004. To date the case remains unsolved and continues to be fought by the Mickelbergs who maintain their innocence and allege a conspiracy by the Western Australia Police to frame them. Jeffrey Shuman
Jeffrey Shuman (born 1962) is an American-French bank robber, dubbed "The Vaulter", considered to be one of Canada's most prolific bank robbers. In 1994, he pleaded guilty to robbing 14 banks in the United States, receiving a 12-year sentence, but was released in 2004, and fled the country while on parole. He then robbed 21 banks in Canada, before fleeing to France on his French passport. In 2016, he was extradited to Canada, and in 2017, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and ordered to pay back nearly $450,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to seven counts of robbery using a firearm. Norman Ryan
Norman "Red" Ryan, (July 8, 1895 – May 23, 1936) was a notorious gangster in early 20th century Toronto, Ontario. He came from an Irish Catholic upbringing and he took to the streets as a young man to engage in crime. He was called the ' Jesse James of Canada' and he was known for armed robbery, safecracking, and other major theft. He killed six people in his career. He was arrested in Minnesota on December 14, 1923 and given life imprisonment, which he served in Canada. He served his sentence at Kingston Penitentiary. He was killed in a liquor store in Sarnia by a police officer after being shot 3 times. In prison he lived the life of a model prisoner and became a poster child for the prison reform movement in Canada. Stephen Reid (writer)
Stephen Reid (March 13, 1950 – June 12, 2018) was a Canadian criminal and writer, who was a member of the notorious Stopwatch Gang and was also convicted twice of bank robbery. Reid served time in over 20 prisons in Canada and the United States. Reid was born in Massey, Ontario, on March 13, 1950, and is of Irish and Ojibwa descent. Reid, working with fellow Canadians Paddy Mitchell, and Lionel Wright stole approximately $15 million—mainly in the 1970s and 1980s—from more than 140 banks and other sites across Canada and the U.S. The Stopwatch Gang, which was famous for its speedy heists—including the 1974 robbery of $750,000 in gold bars from the Ottawa Airport—was named for a stopwatch Reid wore around his neck. Monica Proietti
Monica Proietti (; February 25, 1940 – September 19, 1967) was a Canadian bank robber and folk hero from Montreal, better known as "Machine Gun Molly" (in French: ''Monica la Mitraille''). Proietti came from a poor Montreal family, and many of her relatives were involved in crime; her grandmother served time in jail for receiving stolen goods, and reportedly ran a school for crime for the neighbourhood children in the Red-Light District. In 1956, at the age of 17, Proietti married Anthony Smith, a Scottish gangster (he was 33). The couple had two children. Smith was deported from Canada in 1962. She then became romantically involved with Viateur Tessier, but he was jailed in 1966 for armed robbery. When she was 19 four of her seven siblings perished in a fire in downtown Montreal. Kevin John Pinto (1971 in Bahrain) is a Canadian bank robber and former financier, also known as the Exchange Bandit for his habit of engaging bank tellers in conversation about exchange rates. Beginning in 2002, Pinto robbed 10 banks throughout Ontario; in October 2008, he surrendered to police. He subsequently pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to six years in prison. Kenneth Leishman (June 20, 1931 – December 14, 1979), also known as the Flying Bandit or the Gentleman Bandit was a Canadian criminal responsible for multiple robberies between 1957 and 1966. Leishman was the mastermind behind the largest gold theft in Canadian history. This record stood for over 50 years, until it was surpassed by the Toronto Pearson airport heist in 2023. John Hamilton (gangster)
John "Red" Hamilton (August 27, 1899 April 26, 1934) was a Canadian criminal and bank robber active in the 1920s–1930s, most notably as an associate of John Dillinger. He is best known for his lingering death and secret burial after being mortally wounded during a robbery. Early life Little is known of John Hamilton's life prior to his criminal career. He was born on August 27, 1899, in Byng Inlet, Ontario, Canada, to an Irish-Canadian father from Essex County, Ontario and a German-American woman from New York. Ivan Grose
Ivan Grose (born 8 October 1928) is a Canadian businessman and politician. Grose was born in Toronto, Ontario. He was the Liberal MP of Oshawa from 1993 to 2004. From 1947 to 1951, Grose served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1957 Grose, then 29, held up a bank in Hamilton, Ontario. Grose reportedly took a 22-year-old man who had gone to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce branch hostage with a handgun to his back, and left the bank with $6 000 stuffed into a paper bag. Grose was tried, and eventually pleaded guilty. His time in jail for armed robbery amounted to 19 months. Grose would put his criminal past behind him, becoming a businessman. Roger "Mad Dog" Caron (April 12, 1938 – April 11, 2012) was a Canadian robber and the author of the influential prison memoir '' Go-Boy! Memories of a Life Behind Bars'' ( 1978). At the time of publishing, Caron was 39 years old and had spent 23 years in prison. Early life Roger Caron was born in 1938, to extremely poor parents Donat and Yvonne in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.
