The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (called European Cup Winners' Cup prior to 1994–95) was an association football competition contested between UEFA member associations' domestic cup winners, such as the English FA Cup champions. Hungarian manager Nándor Hidegkuti led Italian club Fiorentina to victory in the inaugural tournament in 1961. As part of UEFA's reorganisation of their cup competitions, the Cup Winners' Cup was abolished and the last final of the competition was held in 1999; Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson's Italian team Lazio triumphed over Spanish opponents, Mallorca. Four managers have twice led their teams to victory in the tournament, Johan Cruyff, Valeri Lobanovsky, Nereo Rocco and most recently Alex Ferguson, who won the cup in 1983 with Aberdeen of Scotland and subsequently with Manchester United of England in 1991. The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was a European football club competition contested annually by the winners of domestic cup competitions. The cup was, chronologically, the second seasonal inter-European club competition organised by UEFA. The tournament ran for 39 seasons, with the final edition held in 1998–99, after which it was discontinued. The first tournament was held in 1960–61, but it was organised by the Mitropa Cup's Organising Committee and not recognised by the governing body of European football until 1963, when it was accepted as a UEFA competition on the initiative of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). From 1972 onwards, the winner of the tournament progressed to play the winner of the European Cup (later the UEFA Champions League) in the European Super Cup. 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup Final
The 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was a football match played between Manchester United and Barcelona on 15 May 1991 at Feijenoord Stadion, Rotterdam. It was the final match of the 1990–91 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 31st European Cup Winners' Cup final. It came at the end of the first season of the reintroduction of English clubs into European competition after the ban following the Heysel disaster in 1985. The match ended 2–1 to Manchester United on the night, with both United goals coming from former Barcelona forward Mark Hughes. Ronald Koeman scored a consolation goal for Barcelona towards the end of the game, but it was not enough to prevent the Red Devils from becoming the first English side to win a European competition since they were banned in 1985. The 1963 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was the final football match of the 1962–63 European Cup Winners' Cup and was the third European Cup Winners' Cup final. It was contested between Tottenham Hotspur of England and the defending champions, Atlético Madrid of Spain, and was held at Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Tottenham won the match 5–1 thanks to goals by Jimmy Greaves (2), John White and Terry Dyson (2). Tottenham's victory made them the first British team to win a major European trophy.
