List Of Sinhalese Queens
Although there were over 180 monarchs who ruled the Sinhalese Monarchy, there have only been 4 Sinhalese female monarchs. Two ruled during the Anuradhapura Period, another two during the Polonnaruwa Period. Anuradhapura Kingdom * Anula of Anuradhapura (47 BC – 42 BC) : Anula was the first known Queen regnant found both within Sri Lankan history and during Anuradhapura period. She is also considered as the first female head of state in Asia. Being come to known first as the consort of King Chora Naga, son of King Valagambahu of Anuradhapura, she is infamous for killing at least 6 of her husbands or consorts by poisoning them. The second husband of her, Kuda Tissa, was actually the son of the brother of ''Chora Naga'' and rose to the throne as his legal successor. But her other husbands who rose to the throne as the King of Sri Lanka were not his legal successors and were only the husbands of then present legal successor, ''Anula''. The Sinhalese monarchy has its origins in the settlement of North Indian Indo-Aryan immigrants to the island of Sri Lanka. The Landing of Vijay as described in the traditional chronicles of the island, the Dipavamsa, Mahavamsa and Culavamsa, and later chronicles, recount the date of the establishment of the first Sinhala Kingdom in 543 BC when Prince Vijaya (543–505 BC), an Indian Prince, and 700 of his followers landed on the island of Sri Lanka and established the Kingdom of Tambapanni.Mittal (2006) p 405 In Sinhalese mythology, Prince Vijaya and followers are told to be the progenitors of the Sinhalese people. Sugala Of Ruhuna
Queen Sugala of Ruhuna also referred to as Sugala Devi (12th century A.D), was the last monarch of the Kingdom of Ruhuna, a state which was located in the Southern and Eastern regions of Sri Lanka. Life The Kingdom of Ruhuna was a Sub kingdom loyal to the King of Anuradhapura. She was the first ruling queen of the Kingdom of Ruhuna. She was claimed to have taken the throne of the Ruhuna, while King Parakramabahu I ruled entire island from Polonnaruwa. Hence, Queen Sugala was not the sole ruler of the country: she is not considered as an Sinhalese monarch, since King Parakramabahu I reigned over large parts of the Sri Lanka. Dona Catherina Of Kandy
Kusumāsana Devi (died 10 July 1613), also known as , was ruling Queen of Kandy in 1581. She was deposed, but queen consort of Kandy by marriage to Vimaladharmasuriya I of Kandy from 1594 to 1604. Life In her infancy she and her father Karaliyadde Bandara fled the kingdom to the Portuguese. Later she was baptised by the Portuguese and named . Kalyanavati Of Polonnaruwa
Kalyanavati was Queen of Polonnaruwa from 1202 to 1208. She was one of the few queens that reigned in Sri Lanka. She succeeded Sahassa Malla as Queen of Polonnaruwa and was succeeded by Dharmasoka. She was the wife of Nissanka Malla. She was widowed in 1196. In 1202, the chief of the army, Ayasmanta, deposed king Sahassa Malla, and placed the dowager queen Kalyanavati on the throne in his stead. Her reign is described as a peaceful one. Ayasmanta managed the affairs of state in the her place, and during these years he founded the Sarajakula-vaddhana college at Weligama, and issued the treatise ''Dhammadhikarana'' ("Rules of Practice") concerning the rules of the caste system. Lilavati Of Polonnaruwa
Queen Lilavati (reigned 1197–1200, 1209–10, and 1211–12) was the fourth woman in Sri Lankan history to rule as sovereign in her own right. Lilavati rose to prominence as the wife of Parakramabahu I, king of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa. Being of royal descent herself, she then ruled as sole monarch on three occasions in the near-anarchy following Parakramabahu's death, with the backing of various generals. The primary source for her life is the '' Culavamsa'', specifically chapter LXXX. It is known that Lilavati was the daughter of Sirivallabha and his wife Sugala, and that she had a brother, also called Manabharana. She would have met her future husband when still young as Parakramabahu was her cousin, the son of her uncle Manabharana of Dhakkinadesa. Ilanaga Of Anuradhapura
Ilanaga, also known as Elunna, was King of Anuradhapura in the 1st century, whose reign lasted from 38 to 44. He overthrew and succeeded his aunt Sivali as King of Anuradhapura and was succeeded by his son Chandamukha. Conflicts with the Lambakarnas Shortly after Ilanaga's coronation, he and his entourage went to Lake Tissa to bathe. The king's servants, who belonged to the Lambakarna dynasty (an ancient clan of Sri Lanka), were very arrogant. They waited until the king went down into the water, and then left the king alone. The king was very angry and tried to break their pride. The Mahavamsa states that he built a dagoba near the Tissa Lake and used Lambakarnas to dig stones and tread clay for it, and deployed Chandalas as their acting officers. Infuriated by this, the Lambakannas revolted against the king and captured him. Chulabhaya was the son of king Amandagamini Abhaya and the ruler of Kingdom of Anuradhapura, Anuradhapura in the 1st century. He reigned for a short period of time from 33 to 35. Sivali was Queen of Anuradhapura in the 1st century, who reigned during the year 35 CE after the death of her brother Chulabhaya. When she enthroned she was an unmarried girl but had ability to keep that position steadily. The House of Vijaya (also known as the Vijayan dynasty and sometimes referred to as the "Great Dynasty") was the first recorded Sinhalese royal dynasty that ruled over the island, Sri Lanka.
