This is a list of Portugal's municipalities by population, according to the estimate of the resident population for the Census 2021 made by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The 308 Portuguese municipalities are divided among the 25 sub-regions and the 7 national regions, the population density of each municipality, and the area it totals. About 64.88% of the national population, 6,760,989 inhabitants, live in the 56 municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, about 18.2% of all national municipalities. While there are 122 municipalities, about 39.6% of all national municipalities, with a population of less than 10,000 inhabitants, a total of 678,855 inhabitants, about 6.51% of the national population. Cávado (intermunicipal Community)
The Comunidade Intermunicipal do Cávado () is an administrative division in northern Portugal. It was created in 2008. It is also a NUTS3 subregion of the Norte Region. The seat of the intermunicipal community is Braga, Norte. Cávado comprises part of the former Braga District. The population in 2011 was 410,169, in an area of , which makes it one of the most densely populated subregions of Portugal. Currently, as of 2021, it has 416.679 inhabitants and a population density of 351 per square kilometres. Its name is derived from the Cávado River that drains a large part of its territory. Vila Franca De Xira
Vila Franca de Xira () is a city and municipality in the Lisbon District in Portugal. The population in 2021 was 137,659, in an area of 318.19 km2. Situated on both banks of the Tagus River, 32 km north-east of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, settlement in the area dates back to neolithic times, as evidenced by findings in the Cave of Pedra Furada. Vila Franca de Xira is said to have been founded by French followers of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, around 1200. The town is mostly famous for its bull-running festivals in July and October. Bulls are raised in the salty marshlands of the Ribatejo, which is also a notable breeding ground for the magnificent Lusitano horse, esteemed for its quick reflexes and maneuverability. Seixal () is a Portuguese city and municipality, located in the district of Setúbal, in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. Its population includes 184,269 inhabitants (2011), in an area of that includes six parishes. It is situated across the Tagus River estuary from Lisbon. Amadora
Amadora () is a municipality and urbanized city in the northwest of the Lisbon metropolitan area and 10 km from central Lisbon. The population in 2011 was 175,136, in an area of 23.78 km² (9.2 sq mi). It is the most densely populated municipality in Portugal.
