Volleyball is one of the sports that is played at the Summer Olympic Games in two disciplines: the traditional six-per-side indoor game, and the newer game of beach volleyball. Indoor volleyball was added to the Olympic programme in 1957 at the 53rd session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the first competitions were held at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The Soviet Union won a medal in both the men's and women's competition at the first five Olympics that included volleyball, including the men's gold medal in Tokyo. The Japanese women's team won the gold at the inaugural Olympic volleyball competition, and the silver at the following two Games. The Montreal Games of 1976 saw the Polish men win the nation's only gold medal in the sport, after the women had won bronze in 1964 and 1968. Lang Ping
"Jenny" Lang Ping (; born 10 December 1960) is a Chinese former volleyball player and the current head coach of China's women's national volleyball team. She is the former head coach of the United States women's national volleyball team. As a player, Lang won the most valuable player award in women's volleyball at the 1984 Olympics. In 2002, Lang became an inductee of the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She coached the U.S. women's national team to a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in her home country. Lang later coached the gold medal-winning Chinese women's national team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first person in volleyball history, male or female, to have won Olympic gold both as a player and as a coach. Charles Frederick "Karch" Kiraly () (born November 3, 1960) is an American volleyball player, coach and broadcast announcer. In the 1980s he was a central part of the United States men's national volleyball team, U.S National Team that won gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics, 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, 1988 Olympic Games. Sergey Yuryevich Tetyukhin (russian: Серге́й Юрьевич Тетюхин; born 23 September 1975) is a former Russian volleyball player. He was born in Fergana, Uzbekistan. He is 1.97 m tall, and plays as passer-attacker. Together with Samuele Papi and Sérgio Santos he is one of only three male volleyball players who have accumulated four Olympic medals in the course of their long sporting careers. Tetyukhin, however, has the distinction of being the only volleyball player in the world (male or female) with four Olympic medals who has all three types of those awards, including gold at London Olympics. Sérgio Dutra dos Santos, known as Serginho or Escadinha (born 15 October 1975) is a former Brazilian volleyball player. As a member of Brazil men's national volleyball team, he won gold medals at the 2004 and 2016 Olympics and silver medals at the 2008 and 2012 editions.
