This is a list of notable Japanese restaurants. Japanese cuisine is the food—ingredients, preparation and way of eating—of Japan. The traditional food of Japan is based on rice with miso soup and other dishes, each in its own utensil, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. The side dishes often consist of fish, pickled vegetables, and vegetables cooked in broth. Fish is common in the traditional cuisine. Afuri
Afuri (also known as Afuri Izakaya) is a chain of ramen restaurants, based in Tokyo, Japan. History The original noodle shop opened at the base of Mount Afuri in 2001. Founder Hiroto Nakamura partnered with Taichi Ishizuki to open a location in southeast Portland's Buckman neighborhood in 2016. Since then, three additional locations have opened in the Portland metropolitan area, in downtown and northwest Portland as well as Beaverton. There are also locations in California, Canada (Vancouver), Hong Kong, Portugal, and Singapore. In 2020, plans were announced to expand into northwest Portland. Feng Sushi
Feng Sushi is a UK-based restaurant chain known for advocating sustainable fish farming. The company was founded in 1999 by chef Silla Bjerrum and chef Jeremy Rose, with restaurant entrepreneur Luke Johnson the majority owner since 2010. Bjerrum has been credited by Caterer and Hotelkeeper Magazine as being "...part of the movement that brought sushi to the mainstream". Boxer Ramen
Boxer Ramen is a small chain of ramen restaurants in Portland, Oregon, United States. Micah Camden and Katie Poppe opened the original 30-seat restaurant in 2013, followed by a second in January 2015. Matt Lynch and Chris Thornton have since joined as partners. Boxer Ramen opened a third, fourth, and fifth location in March 2016, December 2017, and 2018, respectively. Biwa was an ''izakaya'' in Portland, Oregon. Description The restaurant served Japanese cuisine including ramen, sashimi, and udon noodles. History Biwa opened in 2007. In 2013, the restaurant began implementing a five percent surcharge to "provide health insurance and living wages" for all staff. In 2016, Biwa relocated and "split" within the same building, becoming Parasol Bar and the Japanese restaurant Biwa Izakaya. Parasol closed in 2017. Bincho
Bincho, also known as Bincho Yakitori, was a London-based Japanese restaurant styled on the traditional izakayas found throughout Japan. Yakitori, literally translated as "grilled bird", is prepared on skewers and cooked over dense coals known as Bincho-tan made from oak. History David Miney, formerly of OXO Tower Restaurant and Rick Stein, had the idea of opening an izakaya in London whilst he was living in Tokyo in the late 1990s. Miney spent several years delving into the dingy late night izakaya scene, usually the traditional haunt of drunken salarymen and young Japanese hostesses. Bergh–Stoutenburgh House
The Bergh–Stoutenburgh House is located on U.S. Route 9 opposite Mansion Drive in Hyde Park, New York. It is currently used as a district office by state senator Sue Serino. Description and history Built before the Revolutionary War, it is one of only two remaining Dutch Colonial stone houses in Hyde Park. It is a five-by-two-bay one-story building with a slate-covered gambrel roof pierced by two brick chimneys at the gable ends. It is sided in uncoursed fieldstone, with clapboard on the gable ends. Two small frame wings project from the north and east (rear). An arched doorway on the south leads to the cellar. The main entrance has a flat-roofed wooden portico.
