San Sebastian Cathedral
The San Sebastian Cathedral is a late 19th-century church in Bacolod, Negros Occidental in the Philippines. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bacolod. History A small village inhabited by Malayans called ''Magsungay'' was placed under the protection of St. Sebastian by early Christian missionaries during the 1700s. This village was later came to be known as ''San Sebastian de Magsungay'' and was put under the governance of Bernardo de los Santos, the village's first gobernadorcillo. Due to widespread Moro pirate attacks, the people of ''Magsungay'' moved to a new settlement upon the hilly terrain called ''bakólod'', the precursor of the modern-day city of Bacolod. In 1806, Fr. Bacong, Negros Oriental
Bacong, officially the Municipality of Bacong, is a 4th class municipality in the province of Negros Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 41,207 people. Bacong was the hometown of the Visayan hero of the Philippine Revolution, Pantaleon Villegas, better known as León Kilat. Bacong is from Dumaguete City. History Bacong was founded 1801 as a coastal settlement. It is the Province's first town south of the Capital. Silliman University
Silliman University (also referred to as Silliman or SU) is a private research university in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, the Philippines. Established in 1901 as Silliman Institute by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, it is the first American and Protestant founded institution of higher learning in the Philippines and in Asia. The university was named after Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a former businessman and philanthropist from Cohoes, New York who provided the initial sum of $10,000 for the establishment of the school. Starting as an elementary school for boys, the school expanded to become a college in 1910, acquiring university status in 1938. Silliman University was run and operated by Americans during the first half of the 20th century.
