Chilean Jews are Chilean people, Chileans residing in the Chile, Republic of Chile who are of either Jews, Jewish ancestry or observe the Judaism, Jewish faith. In the 2012 Chilean census, 16,294 Chilean residents listed their religion as Judaism, an increase of 8.8% since 2002. The actual Jewish community in Chile is estimated to be slightly larger. Chilean Jews are found across the country, although the majority live in the cities of Santiago, Chile, Santiago and Valparaíso, and are predominantly found in higher-paying professions and all walks of public life. The Chilean Jewish population decreased in the political turmoil of the 1970s and 1980s, but their identity as Jews in Chile remains. Most Chilean Jews are Ashkenazi Jews, Ashkenazim. Chileans ( es, Chilenos) are people identified with the country of Chile, whose connection may be residential, legal, historical, ethnic, or cultural. For most Chileans, several or all of these connections exist and are collectively the source of their Chilean identity. Chile is a multilingual and multicultural society, but an overwhelming majority of Chileans have Spanish as their first language and either are Christians or have a Christian cultural background. Rodrigo Alejandro Goldberg Mierzejewski (born August 9, 1971) is a Chilean former international football player. As a player, he gained national notoriety in Israel for his talented play with Maccabi Tel Aviv and good use of the Hebrew language. Leonardo Farkas
Leonardo Julio Farkas Klein (born March 20, 1967) is a Chilean businessman. Early years Farkas's parents were Hungarian Jews, Jews of Hungarian descent who emigrated from Transylvania to South America in 1939. Farkas studied business administration at the University of Santiago, Chile. In the 1980s, he emigrated to the United States and made a living working in show business as a piano player while traveling throughout the country. He also worked in several Caribbean cruising companies until the death of his father. Farkas then returned to Chile to manage the family business. Leo Corry (ליאו קורי, born 1956 in Santiago de Chile) is an Israeli historian of mathematics. Biography Corry migrated with his Jewish family to Venezuela when he was two years old. He attended primary and secondary school at Colegio Moral y Luces of Caracas and then at the Universidad Simón Bolívar studied mathematics with licentiate's degree in 1977. He attended graduate school at the University of Tel Aviv. There he received in 1983 his master's degree in mathematics with master's thesis ''Splitting data in cohomology classes'', supervised by Shmuel Rosset, and in 1990 his Ph.D. in the history of science with Ph.D. thesis ''The origins of category theory as a mathematical discipline'', supervised by Sabetai Unguru and Shmuel Rosset. Robert Wertheimer Frucht (later known as Roberto Frucht) (9 August 1906 – 26 June 1997) was a German-Chilean mathematician; his research specialty was graph theory and the symmetries of graphs. Education and career In 1908, Frucht's family moved from Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), where he was born, to Berlin. Frucht entered the University of Berlin in 1924 with an interest in differential geometry, but switched to group theory under the influence of his doctoral advisor, Issai Schur; he received his Ph.D. in 1931. Unable to find academic employment in Germany due to his Jewish descent, he became an actuary in Trieste, but left Italy in 1938 because of the racial laws that came into effect at that time. Biography Claudio Bunster attended at Instituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera, a prestigious public high school of Santiago. Bunster was educated at the University of Chile and Princeton University, where he earned his doctorate in physics in 1973.
