Alabama Brigade (American Civil War)
Also known as Law’s Brigade, the Alabama Brigade was a Military organization, military formation of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It was created in 1863 and participated in major combat operations such as the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Battle of the Wilderness and the Siege of Petersburg, Richmond-Petersburg Campaign. It was considered one of the great fighting brigades of the Army of Northern Virginia. Service history The Alabama Brigade was established on 19 January 1862; consisting of five Alabama infantry regiments that were collected from three different brigades.Gottfried In November, the 44th Alabama regiment was added to this brigade. 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment
The 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Confederate States Army regiment during the American Civil War. The regiment was composed of ten companies that came from various counties across Alabama. It is one of the few regiments that served both in the Army of Northern Virginia and Army of Tennessee. It is not to be confused with another 26th Alabama (Coltart's) which was formed around the same time in Mississippi; that unit being renumbered as the 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment on June 6, 1863. Organization and muster The 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment was formed at Tuscumbia, Alabama, on March 27, 1862, by increasing the 3rd Alabama Battalion to a regiment. Two companies of the 3rd battalion had been captured at Fort Donelson, and were not part of the redesignation. The 22nd Alabama Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Service The 22nd Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, November, 1861, and armed by private enterprise. It first served in Mobile, Alabama; from there it was ordered to Corinth, Mississippi, and reached Tennessee in time for the Battle of Shiloh, where it suffered severe loss. It fought at Munfordville, 14 to 16 September 1862; at Perryville, 8 October, and at Murfreesboro, 31 December to 2 January 1863. It took a very brilliant part in the impetuous assault on Rosecrans' army at the Battle of Chickamauga, 20 September, and suffered severely, losing almost two-thirds of its forces, the killed including five color-bearers. 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment
The 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment was a Confederate volunteer infantry regiment from Alabama during the American Civil War. History The 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery, Alabama on September 16, 1861. The brigade was part of the District of Alabama in the Department of Alabama and West Florida until January 1862, when it joined the Army of Mobile. The regiment was part of the Army of Mobile until February and in May became part of Barton's Brigade in the Department of East Tennessee. The 20th Alabama fought in the Battle of Cumberland Gap on June 18. In June it became part of Reynolds' Brigade in Stevenson's Division. In October it transferred to Tracy's Brigade of McCown's Division. Tracy's Brigade was sent to Vicksburg in December, fighting in the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou from December 27 to 29, and became part of Stevenson's Division in January. The 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Service The 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment was formed in Huntsville, Alabama, on August 14, 1861. The unit fought its first battle at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6 and 7, 1862. 17th Alabama Infantry Regiment
The 17th Alabama Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Service The 17th Alabama Infantry Regiment was mustered in at Montgomery, Alabama in August 1861 under Colonel Thomas H. Watts. Watts organized the 17th Infantry and led it at Pensacola and Corinth, but resigned as its colonel to serve as the Confederacy's attorney general in President Jefferson Davis' cabinet. The regiment surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina in April 1865.
