List Of Akvavit Producers
Akvavit is distilled in several locations by a number of different producers. Most small distillers founded in the 19th century have now been bought out by larger concerns, so distillation is performed by a surprisingly small number of companies. For example, in Norway, there are only two companies. Below is a list of aquavit distillers and brands organized by the general location of the distiller. Note that Vin & Sprit AB of Sweden has subsidiaries in several countries. It is also the owner of the Absolut Vodka brand. In later years a new wave of independent distillers has seen the light of day in Scandinavia. Akvavit
''Akvavit'' or ''aquavit'' (; also ''akevitt'' in Norwegian; ''aquavit'' in English) is a distilled spirit that is principally produced in Scandinavia, where it has been produced since the 15th century. ''Akvavit'' is distilled from grain or potatoes, and is flavoured with a variety of herbs. It is also popular in Northern Germany. ''Akvavit'' gets its distinctive flavour from spices and herbs, and the dominant flavour must (according to the European Union) come from a distillate of caraway and/or dill seed. It typically contains 40% alcohol by volume or 80 proof (U.S.) The EU has established a minimum of 37.5% ABV for ''akvavit'' to be named as such. Etymology The word ''aquavit'' derives from the Latin ''aqua vitae'', "water of life." Compare the words ''whisky'' or '' whiskey'', from Gaelic ''uisce beatha'', which has the same meaning. Likewise, clear fruit brandy is called '' eau de vie'' (French for "water of life"). Drinking culture Akvavit is an important part of ...

Vin & Sprit
V&S Group (''V&S Vin & Sprit AB''), founded in 1917, is an international producer and distributor of alcoholic beverages. The group is currently owned by Pernod Ricard. Headquartered in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, the group employs approximately 2,500 people. Until 1994, the group had the position of a national alcohol monopoly for production and distribution, but this was abolished when Sweden joined the European Union in 1995. However, the Swedish alcohol retailing monopoly, operated by Systembolaget, is still in force. On March 31, 2008 it was announced that the Swedish government intended to sell V & S Group to Pernod Ricard for 5.626 billion euro, corresponding to 55 billion Swedish kronor. The deal was approved and finalized on July 24, 2008 at an estimated value of 5.69 billion euro. The acronym ''V&S'' comes from the name ''Vin & Sprit'', literally meaning "Wine & Liquor." Organization and brands V&S Group is divided into three main areas: *''V&S Absolute Sp ...

Absolut Vodka
Absolut Vodka is a brand of vodka, produced near Åhus, in southern Sweden. Absolut is a part of the French group Pernod Ricard. Pernod Ricard bought Absolut for €5.63 billion in 2008 from the Swedish state. Absolut is one of the largest brands of spirits in the world (after Smirnoff, Bacardi) and is sold in 126 countries. History Absolut was established in 1879 by Lars Olsson Smith. Smith challenged the city of Stockholm's liquor marketing monopoly with his vodka. It was sold outside the city border at a lower price than the monopoly's product. Smith offered free boat rides to the distillery and "Rent Brännvin" was highly successful. In 1917, the Swedish government monopolized the country's alcohol industry. Vodka was then sold nationwide under the name "Absolut Rent Brännvin". In 1979, the old name Absolut was picked up when the upper-price range Absolut Vodka was introduced. ''Renat vodka, Renat'' is the name of another vodka product sold by Pernod Ricard Sweden AB. Brennivín
Brennivín () is considered to be Iceland's signature distilled beverage. It is distilled from fermented grain mash and then combined with Iceland's very soft, high-pH water, and flavored only with caraway. A clear, savory, herbal spirit, the taste is often described as having notes of fresh rye bread. It is considered to be a type of aquavit and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). The steeping of herbs in alcohol to create schnapps is a long-held folk tradition in Nordic countries, and Brennivín is still the traditional drink for the mid-winter feast of Þorrablót. Today, Icelanders typically drink it chilled, as a shot, with a beer, or as a base for cocktails. It often takes the place of gin in classic cocktails, or of a lighter rum in tropical drinks. Etymology The word "brennivín" means "burning wine" and comes from the same origin as brandy, namely ''brandewijn,'' which has its origins in the Dutch language (also compare German ''Branntwein'' and Afrikaans ''brandewyn'') ...
