List Of African-American Historic Places In South Carolina
__NOTOC__ This list of African American Historic Places in South Carolina was originally based on a report by the South Carolina Department of Archives & History through its South Carolina African American Heritage Commission. The first edition was originally based on the work of student interns from South Carolina State University or the 2021 update. Some of these sites are on the National Register of Historic Places (''NR'') as independent sites or as a contributing property (''CP'') of a historic district. Several of the sites are National Historic Landmarks (''NRL''). Others have South Carolina historical markers (''HM''). The citation on historical markers is given in the reference. The location listed is the nearest community to the site. More precise locations are given in the reference. South Carolina State University
South Carolina State University (SCSU or SC State) is a public, historically black, land-grant university in Orangeburg, South Carolina, United States. It is the only public, historically black land-grant institution in South Carolina, is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Hampton County
Hampton County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,561. Its county seat is Hampton. It was named for Confederate Civil War general Wade Hampton, who in the late 1870s, with the ending of Reconstruction, was elected as governor of South Carolina. The county includes two small urban clusters: Hampton (2022 Est. Pop. 2,463) and Estill (1,815). History The county is named for Wade Hampton III, one of the country's leading slaveowners and a Lieutenant General for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. After the war, he led the Redeemers and Red Shirts on a campaign to reestablish Democratic rule South Carolina. Its county seat and largest municipality is Edgefield. The county was established on March 12, 1785. Dillon County
Dillon County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the county's population was 28,292, down from 32,062 in 2010. The county seat is Dillon. Founded in 1910 from a portion of Marion County, both Dillon County and the city of Dillon were named for prosperous local citizen James W. Dillon (1826-1913), an Irishman who settled there and led a campaign to bring the railroad into the community. The result of this effort was the construction of the Wilson Short Cut Railroad, which later became part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
