Rukarara River
The Rukarara River (or Lukarara) is a river in western Rwanda that is a tributary of the Mwogo River, in turn a tributary of the Nyabarongo River. It is the most distant headwater of the Nile. Sources The Rukarara rises in forested country in southern Rwanda to the east of the Congo-Nile Divide. The Kamiranzovu Swamp in the Nyungwe Forest Reserve provides a natural reservoir for the Rukarara. The source of the Rukarara is now known to be the overall source of the Nile. The Mwogo River is a river in western Rwanda that is a tributary of the Nyabarongo River. Course The Mwogo rises in forested country in southern Rwanda to the east of the Congo-Nile Divide. It has its sources in the Kitabi sector of the Nyamagabe District. It runs eastward past Nyarusiza into the Huye District. It runs in a northeast direction through the western part of this district, entering the Nyanza district. In Nyanza district it runs northeast, passing Mweya at the point where the Gihimbi River enters it from the left. Below this point it is joined by the Rukarara River from the left. The Nyabarongo (or Nyawarungu) is a major river in Rwanda, part of the upper headwaters of the Nile. With a total length of , it is the longest river entirely in Rwanda. It is extended in Lake Rweru including a upper course of Kagera River before joining into Ruvuvu River to form the Kagera River. The river begins its course at the confluence of the rivers Mbirurume and Mwogo in the South West of the country. These two rivers themselves begin in Nyungwe Forest, and are considered by some to be the most distant source of the Nile. From its start, Nyabarongo flows northward for 85 km (53 miles), and forms the border between the Western and Southern Provinces. In hydrology, discharge is the volumetric flow rate of water that is transported through a given cross-sectional area. It includes any suspended solids (e.g. sediment), dissolved chemicals (e.g. CaCO3(aq)), or biologic material (e.g. diatoms) in addition to the water itself. Terms may vary between disciplines. For example, a fluvial hydrologist studying natural river systems may define discharge as streamflow, whereas an engineer operating a reservoir system may equate it with outflow, contrasted with inflow. Theory and calculation A discharge is a measure of the quantity of any fluid flow over unit time. The quantity may be either volume or mass.
