Life With The Lyons
''Life with the Lyons'' was a British radio and television domestic sitcom from the 1950s (1950–1961 on radio, 1955–1960 on television). Overview ''Life with the Lyons'' featured a real American family. Ben Lyon and his wife Bebe Daniels had settled in London during the Second World War and featured with Vic Oliver in the radio series'' Hi, Gang!'' that ran from 1940 to 1949. Radio ''Life With the Lyons'' followed and, with Ben and Bebe, featured their children Richard and Barbara Lyon. Although scripted, it expanded on real-life events including Barbara's real-life marriage to Russell Turner in 1957. The radio series premiered on 5 November 1950 and ended in 1961 was the first situation comedy in the United Kingdom. Sitcom
A sitcom, a portmanteau of situation comedy, or situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who mostly carry over from episode to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Sitcoms originated in radio, but today are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. A situation comedy television program may be recorded in front of a studio audience, depending on the program's production format. The effect of a live studio audience can be imitated or enhanced by the use of a laugh track. Critics disagree over the utility of the term "sitcom" in classifying shows that have come into existence since the turn of the century. Jill Allgood
Jill Allgood (15 November 1910 - 1995) was a British producer, director, script writer, author and broadcaster who worked for the BBC. Allgood was a personal friend of Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon, and worked with them professionally. In 1944 she was working for Cecil Madden, Head of BBC Overseas Entertainment, and from 1944 to 1946, with Howard Agg (and later with C. F. Meehan), she devised and produced a weekly/fortnightly programme for forces in hospitals called ''Here's Wishing You Well Again''. There she got to know Bebe and Ben, who were often requested guests on that programme. She collaborated with Bebe on episodes of ''Life with the Lyons'', and wrote their biography ''Bebe and Ben''. Between 1947 and 1949 Jill Allgood wrote documentary scripts for the BBC's ''Woman's Hour'', followed by work as editor, presenter and producer of children's radio programmes. Royal Command Performance
A Royal Command Performance is any performance by actors or musicians that occurs at the direction or request of a reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Although English monarchs have long sponsored their own theatrical companies and commissioned theatrical performances, the first Royal Command Performance to bear that name was staged at Windsor Castle in 1848 by order of Queen Victoria. From then on, command performances were frequently staged, often calling upon the leading actors from the London theatres, until the death of Prince Albert in 1861. There were no further command performances until they recommenced in 1881. These included plays, revues, comic operas and other musical theatre. Roy Sydney George Hattersley, Baron Hattersley, (born 28 December 1932) is a British Labour Party politician, author and journalist from Sheffield. He was MP for Birmingham Sparkbrook for over 32 years from 1964 to 1997, and served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992. ''The Lyons in Paris'' (also called ''The Lyons Abroad'' and ''Mr. and Mrs. in Paree'') is a 1955 British comedy film directed by Val Guest and starring Ben Lyon, Bebe Daniels and Reginald Beckwith. It was a sequel to the 1954 film ''Life with the Lyons'', and was shot at Southall Studios, though some genuine Paris location shots were used. Plot Has Ben Lyon forgotten his wedding anniversary? Val Guest (born Valmond Maurice Grossman; 11 December 1911 – 10 May 2006) was an English film director and screenwriter. Beginning as a writer (and later director) of comedy films, he is best known for his work for Hammer, for whom he directed 14 films, and science fiction films. He enjoyed a long career in the film industry from the early 1930s until the early 1980s.
