Latécoère 24
The Latécoère 24 was a French three-engined parasol winged flying boat, built in 1927 to test the longer stretches of the South Atlantic crossing. Trials showed that it was overweight and consequently performed below specification. Design and development In 1926, Latécoère were considering ways of crossing the South Atlantic in steps. One obvious route from France's colonial possessions in West Africa and the Brazilian mainland involved a 1,400 mi ( 2,250 km) flight due south, from the Cape Verde Islands to Fernando de Noronha, as its greatest step. The aircraft they designed to do this was a three-engined parasol winged flying boat, the Latécoère 24. It was designed to carry mail, not passengers. Flying Boats
A flying boat is a type of fixed-winged seaplane with a hull, allowing it to land on water. It differs from a floatplane in that a flying boat's fuselage is purpose-designed for floatation and contains a hull, while floatplanes rely on fuselage-mounted floats for buoyancy. Though the fuselage provides buoyancy, flying boats may also utilize under-wing floats or wing-like projections (called sponsons) extending from the fuselage for additional stability. Flying boats often lack landing gear which would allow them to land on the ground, though many modern designs are convertible amphibious aircraft which may switch between landing gear and flotation mode for water or ground takeoff and landing. Sponsons are projections extending from the sides of land vehicles, aircraft or watercraft to provide protection, stability, storage locations, mounting points for weapons or other devices, or equipment housing. Farman Aviation Works (french: Avions Farman) was a French aircraft company founded and run by the brothers Richard, Henri, and Maurice Farman. They designed and constructed aircraft and engines from 1908 until 1936; during the French nationalization and rationalization of its aeronautical industry, Farman's assets were assigned to the ''Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Centre'' (SNCAC). In 1941 the Farman brothers reestablished the firm as the "''Société Anonyme des Usines Farman''" (SAUF), but only three years later it was absorbed by Sud-Ouest. Maurice's son, Marcel Farman, reestablished the SAUF in 1952, but his effort proved unsuccessful and the firm was dissolved in 1956. Fernando de Noronha () is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, part of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, and located off the Brazilian coast. It consists of 21 islands and islets, extending over an area of . Only the eponymous main island is inhabited; it has an area of and a population estimated at 3,101 in 2020. While the archipelago is relatively low-lying, there are parts stretching above in elevation. The islands are administratively unique in Brazil. They form a "state district" ( pt, distrito estadual) that is administered directly by the government of the state of Pernambuco (despite being closer to the state of Rio Grande do Norte).
