Lake Thun Railway Line
The Lake Thun railway line is a railway line in the Swiss canton of Bern. It links the towns of Thun, Spiez and Interlaken, running principally along the southern shore of Lake Thun. The line was opened in 1893 by the Lake Thun Railway (german: Thunerseebahn, TSB) company, but incorporates much of the earlier Bödeli Railway (german: Bödelibahn) dating back to 1872. The line is long, and is currently owned and operated by the BLS AG railway company. Besides traffic to and from Interlaken, the section of line between Thun and Spiez also carries heavy traffic to and from the Lötschberg line. Canton Of Bern
The canton of Bern or Berne (german: Kanton Bern; rm, Chantun Berna; french: canton de Berne; it, Canton Berna) is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. Därligen
Därligen is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Därligen is first mentioned in 1244 as ''Tedningen''. The earliest traces of settlement in the area are scattered Bronze Age artifacts which have been discovered near the lake shore. The village was part of the ''Herrschaft'' of Unspunnen during the Middle Ages. It was annexed by Bern in 1515. The Bödelibahn railway from Därligen to Interlaken opened in 1872 and was extended to Bönigen in 1874. Initially this line was unconnected to the rest of the Swiss railway system, and merely served as a link between the steamships on both lakes, with all goods and passengers transferred between boat and train at Därligen. However, in 1893, the line was extended westwards to Thun, with onward connections to Bern and beyond, thus removing the need for such transfer. Burgdorf, Switzerland
Burgdorf (french: Berthoud; High Alemannic: ''Bùùrdlef'') is the largest city in the Emmental in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It was the capital of the district of the same name until 2010, when it became part of the new Emmental district. History Scattered archeological finds indicate that the area around Burgdorf was inhabited during the Neolithic era, the Late Bronze Age and the Hallstatt. During the High Middle Ages the land that would become Burgdorf was owned by the Kingdom of Burgundy and then after 1080 by the Dukes of Zähringen. Either the kings or the dukes built a castle on the left bank of the Emme river. Burgdorf is first mentioned in 1236 as ''in oppido Burchtorff'', while Burgdorf Castle is mentioned in 1080 as ''castellum Bertoldi ducis''. Burgdorf–Thun Railway
The Burgdorf–Thun railway is a railway line in Switzerland, which was built by the ''Burgdorf-Thun-Bahn'' (Burgdorf-Thun Railway, BTB). The line from Burgdorf via Konolfingen to was opened by the company in 1899 as the first electrified mainline railway (as distinct from light railway) in Europe. It is now part of BLS AG. History There was increasing support for a more direct rail connection between Burgdorf and Thun to shorten the route by almost 13 kilometres, which is 53 km via Bern. The railway was originally licensed in two sections. The first license was granted on 17 April 1891 for the section from Konolfingen to Biglen and the second on 29 June 1893 for the section from Konolfingen to Thun with a branch to Kiesen. Thun Railway Station
Thun is a railway station in the town of Thun, in the Swiss canton of Bern. At the station, the Swiss Federal Railways owned Bern to Thun main line makes a junction with the other lines, all owned by the BLS AG. These lines are the Gürbetal line from Bern via Belp, the Burgdorf to Thun line from Burgdorf via Konolfingen, and the Lake Thun line to Spiez and Interlaken. The station is served by various operators, including the BLS AG, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Deutsche Bahn. The station also provides an interchange with the local bus network provided by the Verkehrsbetriebe STI. Jungfrau Zeitung
The Jungfrau ( "maiden, virgin"), at is one of the main summits of the Bernese Alps, located between the northern canton of Bern and the southern canton of Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch. Together with the Eiger and Mönch, the Jungfrau forms a massive wall of mountains overlooking the Bernese Oberland and the Swiss Plateau, one of the most distinctive sights of the Swiss Alps. The summit was first reached on August 3, 1811, by the Meyer brothers of Aarau and two chamois hunters from Valais. Bern–Thun Railway Line
The Bern–Thun railway line is a double-tracked, electrified railway line that runs through the Aare valley in the Swiss canton of Bern. It is part of the Lötschberg- Simplon axis between Germany and Italy. It was opened in 1859 by the Swiss Central Railway (''Schweizerische Centralbahn''). History The line from Bern to Thun was opened by the Swiss Central Railway on 1 July 1859. The line began in Wylerfeld and used the line opened from Olten to Bern station in 1858. In 1861, it was extended by a little over a kilometre from Thun to Scherzligen, where there was a connection to the steamboats on Lake Thun. These were initially the only way for passengers to continue their trips. A train ferry is a ship (ferry) designed to carry railway vehicles. Typically, one level of the ship is fitted with railway tracks, and the vessel has a door at the front and/or rear to give access to the wharves. In the United States, train ferries are sometimes referred to as "car ferries", as distinguished from "auto ferries" used to transport automobiles. The wharf (sometimes called a " slip") has a ramp, and a linkspan or "apron", balanced by weights, that connects the railway proper to the ship, allowing for tidal or seasonal changes in water level.
