Formal higher learning in Nepal began with the establishment of Tri-Chandra College in 1918, Nepal's first college. Until 1985,Tribhuvan University was its first and only university. The second university to be founded was Mahendra Sanskrit University, Nepal Sanskrit University, which was soon followed by Kathmandu University in 1990, and Purbanchal University, Purbanchal and Pokhara University, Pokhara Universities in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus () is a constituent campus of Tribhuvan University located in Ghantaghar, Kathmandu. Founded in 1918 by Chandra Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, Chandra Shumsher, it is the oldest institute of higher learning in Nepal. Rajarshi Janak University is a public university located in Janakpur of Dhanusha District, the capital of Madhesh Province. RJU operates through its two constituent campus, the central campuses in Janakpur and the other being newly established engineering campus in Gaushala. Nepal Open University () is a distance learning public university in Nepal. It was established in 2016 through an act of Parliament. The degrees awarded by the university are treated as equivalent to degrees awarded by any other Nepali University under the purview of the University Grants Commission. History of Establishment The initial formal endeavor of establishing an Open University in Nepal can be traced to 1999, when the government became a signatory of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Consortium to Open and Distance Education. The budget speech of Fiscal Year 2008/09 allocated funding to implement Open University concept in order to provide an opportunity to youths who were deprived of getting education during the conflict period.
