List Of Power Stations In Virginia
This is a list of electricity-generating power stations in the U.S. state of Virginia. In 2019, Virginia had a total summer capacity of 28,045 MW (the total capacity of all stations given below is 24,986 MW ) through all of its power plants, and a net generation of 96,828 GWh. The corresponding electrical energy generation mix in 2021 was 56.6% natural gas, 29.9% nuclear, 3.8% solar, 3.6% biomass, 3.3% coal, 1.9% hydroelectric, 0.6% other, and 0.3% petroleum. The Virginia Clean Economy Act of 2020 directs the construction of 16,100 MW of solar power and onshore wind and up to 5,200 MW of offshore wind by 2035, bringing the state's utility-delivered power to 100% renewable energy by 2045. It will close all but two coal-fired plants by 2024, with the Virginia City and Clover plants allowed to operate until 2045, though economic conditions may close them earlier. Electricity generation is the process of generating electric power from sources of primary energy. For utilities in the electric power industry, it is the stage prior to its delivery (transmission, distribution, etc.) to end users or its storage (using, for example, the pumped-storage method). Electricity is not freely available in nature, so it must be "produced" (that is, transforming other forms of energy to electricity). Production is carried out in power stations (also called "power plants"). Alexandria is an independent city in the northern region of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. Hurt is a town in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, United States. Population was 1,304 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Danville, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The community bears the name of Colonel John R. Hurt, an early citizen. Hill Grove School and Locust Hill are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bassett, Virginia
Bassett is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henry County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,100 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Martinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded along a rail line by the same family that later started Bassett Furniture. Bassett Furniture's headquarters have remained in Bassett since it began in 1902. History The John D. Bassett High School, Eltham Manor, and R.L. Stone House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town of Bassett was named for John D. Bassett and his family. Philpott Dam
Philpott Dam is a concrete, gravity dam on the Smith River in Franklin and Henry counties in the U.S. state of Virginia. It impounds Philpott Lake. Philpott Dam is located about above the mouth of the Smith River. It is about upstream from Bassett, Virginia. The Dam and Philpott Lake were created to control flooding along the Smith River, to generate hydroelectric power, and to provide recreational activities in a series of parks around the lake: Philpott Park, Bowens Creek Park, Goose Point Park, Ryans Park, Jamison Mill Park, Horseshoe Point Park, Twin Ridge Park, Salthouse Branch Park, and Tailrace Park (listed clockwise around the lake beginning at the south end of the dam). Mineral, Virginia
Mineral is a town in Louisa County, Virginia, United States. The population was 467 at the 2010 census. History Mineral was originally known as Tolersville, but adopted its current name when it incorporated in 1902 due to the mining industry that supported the community. It was the center of gold mining activity in Louisa County; during its heyday, there were fifteen gold mines located within two miles (3 km) of the town. A zinc and lead mine also operated in the area into the 1970s. Cuckoo, Harris-Poindexter House and Store, and the Mineral Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. North Anna Nuclear Generating Station
The North Anna Nuclear Generating Station is a nuclear power plant on a site in Louisa County, Virginia, in the Mid-Atlantic United States. The site is operated by Dominion Generation company and is jointly owned by the Dominion Virginia Power corporation (88.4%) and by the Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (11.6%). The plant has two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors which went on-line in 1978 and 1980, respectively. Together the reactors generate 1.79 gigawatts of power, which is distributed mainly to the greater Richmond area and to Northern Virginia. In March 2003, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved 20 year license extensions for both Units 1 & 2. Martinsville Dam
The Martinsville Dam is a gravity dam on the Smith River in Martinsville, Virginia. The dam was completed in 1924 and houses a 1.3 MW power plant which supplies power to the city of Martinsville.
