Free Daily Newspapers
Free newspapers are distributed free of charge, often in central places in cities and towns, on public transport, with other newspapers, or separately door-to-door. The revenues of such newspapers are based on advertising. They are published at different levels of frequencies, such as daily, weekly or monthly. Origins Australia In 1906, the ''Manly Daily'' in Australia was launched. It was distributed on the ferry boats to Sydney and was later published as a free community daily by Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd. Germany In 1885, the ''General-Anzeiger für Lübeck und Umgebung'' (Germany) was launched. The paper was founded in 1882 by Charles Coleman (1852–1936) as a free twice-a-week advertising paper in the Northern German town of Lübeck. In 1885 the paper went daily. Israel Hayom
''Israel Hayom'' () is an Israeli Hebrew-language free daily newspaper. Distributed for free around Israel, it is the country's most widely distributed newspaper. Owned by the family of the late Sheldon Adelson, the casino mogul and political donor, ''Israel Hayom'' has been noted for its editorial stance and coverage of Israeli politics, often sparking debate about its political alignment. History ''Israel Hayom''s print edition, "financed by the American casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson," was launched on 30 July 2007, competing directly with '' Israeli'', another free daily. ''20 Minuten'' (; "20 Minutes") is a free daily newspaper in Switzerland. History and profile Cofounded by Sacha Wigdorovits, who also became a significant shareholder, ''20 Minuten'' was first published in 1999 by 20 Minuten Schweiz AG. The direct competitor '' metropol'' was available in Switzerland between 2000 and 2002. ''20 Minuten'' is published in tabloid format. Since 2005 the newspaper has been owned by Express-Zeitung AG, which is jointly owned by Tamedia (majority holding) and '' Berner Zeitung'' (17.5%). ''Metro'' was a free daily newspaper in Sweden. It was printed in four editions: Stockholm, Gothenburg, Skåne and National, which were distributed in 67 towns and cities throughout the country. The paper was the first European free paper. On 8 August 2019, its cancellation was announced. History and profile ''Metro Stockholm'' was the first version. The paper was launched on 13 February 1995 and distributed in the Stockholm Metro. Its owner and founding company is Modern Times Group (MTG), a subsidiary of the Swedish conglomerate Kinnevik. The Moscow Times
''The Moscow Times'' (''MT'') is an Amsterdam-based independent English-language and Russian-language online newspaper. It was in print in Russia from 1992 until 2017 and was distributed free of charge at places frequented by English-speaking tourists and expatriates, such as hotels, cafés, embassies, and airlines, and also by subscription. The newspaper was popular among foreign citizens residing in Moscow and English-speaking Russians. In November 2015, the newspaper changed its design and type from daily to weekly (released every Thursday) and increased the number of pages to 24. The newspaper Online newspaper, became online-only in July 2017 and launched its Russian-language service in 2020. ''Inquirer Libre'' is a free, bilingual ( Filipino and English) tabloid published in the Philippines by the ''Philippine Daily Inquirer'' as a trimmed-down version of the newspaper for distribution on public transport. Established on November 19, 2001, it is the Philippines' first and Asia's second-oldest free newspaper. The newspaper is available in all stations of the LRT, MRT, and PNR, the Eva Macapagal Super Terminal at the Port of Manila's South Harbor, as well as selected branches of McDonald's. In 2011, a digital print edition was made available for subscribers of the ''Inquirer'' digital print subscription service. ''Metro'' () is a free Dutch newspaper, distributed daily since 1999, mostly to commuters in high-traffic areas. Formerly owned by Metro International, in August 2012 the paper was taken over by the Telegraaf Media Group (TMG). At the time of acquisition, TMG already published another free Dutch newspaper, '' Spits''. Later Spits merged into Metro. History ''Metro'' follows the format of other free newspapers by Metro International, the first one of which appeared in Stockholm in 1995. The Dutch ''Metro'' was the fourth of those, and first appeared on 21 June 1999; it is published five days a week, and for a brief period had a Saturday edition as well.
