Egil Baardseth
Egil Morris Baardseth (born 2 May 1912 in Bærum, died on 29 January 1991 in Trondheim) was a Norwegian botanist and phycologist. Biography Baardseth was born in Bærum, just west of Oslo, to Carl Morris Baardseth (1880-1963), a marine insurance manager, and Solveig Tellefsen. His uncle was publisher Torger Baardseth. He attended the University of Oslo, and for his doctoral work, participated in the 1937-1938 Norwegian Scientific Expedition to Tristan da Cunha in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Upon his return he successfully defended his dissertation and published ''The Marine Algae of Tristan da Cunha'' (1941), which includes an account of the 125 species of red, brown and green algae documented on the expedition. As many as 49 species were endemic to Tristan da Cunha, for which he is credited as first describing. The samples he collected are deposited at the Botanical Museum in Oslo. John Gilbert Baker
John Gilbert Baker (13 January 1834 – 16 August 1920) was an English botanist. His son was the botanist Edmund Gilbert Baker (1864–1949). Biography Baker was born in Guisborough in North Yorkshire, the son of John and Mary (née Gilbert) Baker, and died in Kew. He was educated at Quaker schools at Ackworth School and Bootham School, York. He then worked at the library and herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew between 1866 and 1899, and was keeper of the herbarium from 1890 to 1899. He wrote handbooks on many plant groups, including Amaryllidaceae, Bromeliaceae, Iridaceae, Liliaceae, and ferns. His published works includ''Flora of Mauritius and the Seychelles''(1877) and ''Handbook of the Irideae'' (1892). He married Hannah Unthank in 1860. Their son Edmund was one of twins, and his twin brother died before 1887. John G. Baker was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1878. Henry Baines (botanist)
Henry Baines (15 May 1793 – 1 April 1878) was a notable botanist who lived in York. Life Baines was born on 15 May 1793 in a cottage over the cloisters of St. Leonard's Hospital, York. At that time, the cloisters were used by a Mr. Suttle, a wine merchant, to store his wares. Baines took up gardening aged 12, near to the site of the hospital. He spent some time in Halifax, during which he became acquainted with naturalists Samuel Gibson, Abraham Stansfield, John Nowell, and William Wilson, among others.Wilkinson, Henry J. Louis Antoine François Baillon
Louis Antoine François Baillon (20 January 1778 – 2 December 1855) was a French naturalist and collector. He was born in Montreuil-sur-Mer and died in Abbeville. Baillon's crake is named for him, as is Baillon's shearwater and '' Baillonius bailloni''. Baillon's father, Jean-François-Emmanuel Baillon (c. 1742 – 25 October 180), a lawyer, natural history specimen collector, and correspondent of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, introduced him to natural history. In 1798, Baillon began work at as an assistant at the Jardin des Plantes, a position he relinquished following the death of his father. Afterwards, he settled in Abbeville, and like his father, became known for his correspondence with famed naturalists. Henri Ernest Baillon was a French botanist and physician. He was born in Calais on 30 November 1827 and died in Paris on 19 July 1895. Baillon spent his professional life as a professor of natural history, and he published numerous works on botany. James Eustace Bagnall
James Eustace Bagnall ALS (7 November 1830 – 3 September 1918) was an English naturalist with a particular interest in botany, especially bryology. He was the author of the first Flora of Warwickshire ( VC38) in 1891. A noted bryologist, he wrote the ''Handbook of Mosses'' in the Young Collector Series, various editions of which were published between 1886 and 1910. Life James Eustace Bagnall was born in Birmingham on 7 November 1830. He was the eldest son of James Bagnall (1804–1874) and his wife Jane Amelia (née Wall, 1806–1888). When younger, he lived with his family in central Birmingham, being educated at Singers' Hill School; from 1881, census returns show him living with his sister Fanny in the Aston district of Birmingham. Initially he worked at his father's warehouse as a brass-founder. Between 1845 and 1897, he worked as a clerk at Hinks and Wells, who were Birmingham manufacturers of steel pen-nibs.
