Estonians
Estonians or Estonian people ( et, eestlased) are a Finnic ethnic group native to Estonia who speak the Estonian language. The Estonian language is spoken as the first language by the vast majority of Estonians; it is closely related to other Finnic languages, e.g. Finnish, Karelian and Livonian. The Finnic languages are a subgroup of the larger Uralic family of languages, which also includes, e.g., the Sami languages. These languages are markedly different from most other native languages spoken in Europe, most of which have been assigned to Indo-European family of languages. Estonians can also be classified into subgroups according to dialects (e.g., Võros, Setos), although such divisions have become less pronounced due to internal migration and rapid urbanisation in Estonia in the 20th century. Viktor Masing
Viktor Masing (11 April 1925, Tartu – 18 March 2001) was an Estonian botanist and ecologist. He was born in Tartu. He became a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences Founded in 1938, the Estonian Academy of Sciences ( et, Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia) is Estonia's national academy of science in Tallinn. Hans Trass
Hans-Voldemar Trass (2 May 1928 – 14 February 2017) was an Estonian ecologist and botanist. He was a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences since 1975 and president of the Estonian Naturalists' Society from 1964 to 1973 and 1985 to 1991. In 1992, Trass was awarded the Acharius Medal by the International Association for Lichenology. Trass was married to Estonian actress Raine Loo. Urmas Tartes
Urmas Tartes is an Estonian biologist and nature photographer. Life and work Tartes ended his studies in Nõo Secondary school in 1982 with a gold medal and graduated from University of Tartu in 1989 with ''cum laude'' as biologist-zoologist. He became Doctor of Philosophy in 1995 with a thesis "Respiration Rhythms in Insects". Since 1989 he worked in Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany. Between 1996 and 2004 he served as the director of the institute. Between 2005 and 2010 he was a professor in Estonian University of Life Sciences. From then on, he continued as a freelance nature photographer and writer. Awards He was the recipient of the Fourth Class of Order of the White Star in 2001. In 2009 he won Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year in the category "Animals in their Environment" with a photo of a springtail on a snowflake. Andres Salumets (born 19 May 1971 in Jõhvi) is an Estonian biologist, biochemist, and international infertility expert. He currently is Professor of Reproductive Medicine at the Karolinska Institute. Education He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Tartu in 1993 and 1995, respectively. In 1995, he also became an embryologist at the Nova Vita Clinic, a private IVF provider in Estonia. In October 2003, he received his PhD at the University of Helsinki with the academic dissertation "Effects of embryological parameters on the success of fresh and frozen embryo transfers". Career Following the completion of his PhD, he conducted research at the Estonian Biocentre (2004 - 2007). He became a faculty member at the University of Tartu in 2008. Jaan Port
Jaan Port (9 February 1891 in Raassilla, Holstre Parish (now, Viljandi Parish) – 24 January 1950 in Tartu) was an Estonian botanist. He graduated from the University of Tartu in 1926. From 1927 to 1929 Port complemented his gardening knowledge in Germany. Between 1930 and 1937 he worked as the prime gardener in the Botanical Garden of the University of Tartu.
