Inuit
Inuit (singular: Inuk) are a group of culturally and historically similar Indigenous peoples traditionally inhabiting the Arctic and Subarctic regions of North America and Russia, including Greenland, Labrador, Quebec, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, Yukon (traditionally), Alaska, and the Chukotsky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. The Inuit languages are part of the Eskaleut languages, also known as Inuit-Yupik-Unangan, and also as Eskimo–Aleut. Canadian Inuit live throughout most of Northern Canada in the territory of Nunavut, Nunavik in the northern third of Quebec, the Nunatsiavut in Labrador, and in various parts of the Northwest Territories and Yukon (traditionally), particularly around the Arctic Ocean, in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. John Baker (musher)
John Quniaq Baker (born 1962 or 1963 in Kotzebue, Alaska) is a self-employed American dog musher, pilot and motivational speaker of Inupiaq descent who once consistently placed in the top 10 during the long distance Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Baker won the 2011 Iditarod with a finish time of 8 Days 19 Hours 46 Minutes 39 Seconds. Mushing career Baker started mushing at age 14. He raced in his first Iditarod in 1996, placing 22nd. By his third race he placed in the top 10, and he sustained that position for six of the next seven years (from the 1998 to the 2005 Iditarods), only dropping to 22nd once again in 2000 due to dog trouble.Potempa. Ray Mala
Ray Mala (born Ray Agnaqsiaq Wise, also known as Ach-nach-chiak ( Iñupiaq othography: ''Aġnatchiaq'' or ''Aġnasiaq''); December 27, 1906 – September 23, 1952) was a prominent Alaska Native actor. He was one of Hollywood's Native American movie actors along with Lillian St. Cyr, Jesse Cornplanter, Chief Yowlachie, William Eagle Shirt, and Will Rogers who also had successful careers during that time. Mala's career peaked in the 1930s and he was best known for his lead role in Republic Pictures' 14-part serial '' Robinson Crusoe of Clipper Island'' (1936) following his feature role in MGM's ''Eskimo'', directed by Woody Van Dyke. He was named a "Top Ten Alaskan" by ''TIME Magazine'' in 2009. Columbia Eneutseak (January 16, 1893 – August 16, 1959), also billed as Nancy Columbia, was an American performer in silent films, known for writing and starring in '' The Way of the Eskimo'' (1911). Early life Nancy Helena Columbia Palmer was born at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, the daughter of Esther Eneutseak. Her family were Inuit, from Labrador, part of the "Eskimo Village" ethnographic exhibit at the exposition. She was named by Bertha Honore Palmer, a white socialite and head of the exposition's Board of Lady Managers. Eneutseak was a child when she appeared in similar exhibits at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta in 1895, and the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York in 1901, and in traveling shows with the Barnum & Bailey and Ringling circus companies, and at Coney Island. Callan Chythlook-Sifsof
Callan Chythlook-Sifsof (born February 14, 1989) is an American Olympic snowboarder who has competed in snowboard cross since 2005. She is a Yupik/ Inupiaq. She is the first native of Alaska to compete in the Olympics. Biography Early life Chythlook-Sifsof grew up in Aleknagik (a rural fishing village of about 300 people, on the coast of the Bering Sea) and Dillingham, Alaska; she moved with her mother to Girdwood, Anchorage, Alaska to be closer to the Alyeska Resort. She is a Yupik/ Inupiaq Eskimo. 2006–14 In 2006, she was invited to her first Winter X Games competition and won a silver medal in 2011. She won the U.S. National Championships in Tamarack, Idaho, in 2007. In 2008, she won the Jeep King of the Mountain World snowboard series in Sun Valley, Idaho. Ada Blackjack
Ada Blackjack (''née'' Delutuk; May 10, 1898 – May 29, 1983) was an Iñupiaq woman who accompanied an Arctic expedition to the uninhabited Wrangel Island, north of Siberia, eventually living alone on the island for eight months after the other expedition members left or died. Background Ada Delutuk was born on May 10, 1898 or 1899, in the remote settlement of Spruce Creek, from Solomon, Alaska. Ada's father died of food poisoning when she was eight years old, and her mother sent her and her sister, Rita, to a Methodist mission school in Nome, Alaska. She was raised by missionaries who taught her to read English and sew. At age 16, she married Jack Blackjack, a former hunter and dogsled driver, and moved with him to the Seward Peninsula. The Blackjacks had three children, only one of whom survived infancy. Jack abused Ada, finally deserting her and their surviving son, Bennett. Irene Bedard (born July 22, 1967) is an American actress, who has played mostly Native American lead roles in a variety of films.
