Library Park (Colombia)
A library park ( es, parque biblioteca) is a term first used in Colombia for an urban complex formed by a combination of a library building with ample surrounding green space for public use. These library parks are strategically located in the periphery of Medellín, a major Colombian city, to address the need for more cultural and education space and public services in less affluent neighborhoods. According to the Mayor of Medellín, "The library parks are cultural centers for social development that encourage citizen encounters, educational and recreational activities, building groups, the approach to the new challenges in digital culture. And they are also spaces for cultural services that allow cultural creation and strengthening of existing neighborhood organizations." The popularity of library parks in Colombia and their success in improving the conditions of outer city neighborhoods has helped spread the idea to other countries in Latin America. León de Greiff Library, also known as La Ladera Parque Biblioteca (English: Hillside Library Park), is an architecturally renowned library park in Medellín, Colombia. Hiroshi Naito
is an architect from Japan, known for his modern-style buildings. His work includes projects in other countries. He is the principal architect at Hiroshi Naito Architect & Associates in Tokyo. He is Professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and President of Tama Art University Life and career Naito was born in 1950 in Yokohama, Japan. He received a M.Arch from Graduate School of Waseda University. He was chief architect at Fernand Higueras in Madrid, Spain, from 1976 to 1978, and worked at Kikutake Architects in Tokyo from 1979 to 1981. Naito established Naito Architect & Associates in 1981. Ricardo La Rotta Caballero
Ricardo La Rotta Caballero is an architect in Bogotá, Colombia and the principal at the La Rotta Arquitectos firm. His work includes La Quintana Library, a library park named after Tomás Carrasquilla in Medellín, Colombia. Along with Architects Juan Manuel López and Ramón Quevedo, La Rotta was selected as an architect for an ecological redevelopment project north of Bogotá. In 2006, La Rotta's work on the project with Quevedo and López on Edifício Compensar in Bogotá which was selected as one of the 10 "projects of the year" by the publication ''Semana''. Giancarlo Mazzanti (born 1963) is a Colombian architect based in Bogota. Mazzanti was born in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1963. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Pontifical Xaverian University in Bogotá (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana) in 1987. He received a graduate degree in history and theory of architecture and industrial design from the University of Florence, Italy in 1991. Spain Library Park (''Parque Biblioteca España'') is a library park located in the Santo Domingo Savio neighborhood of Medellín, Colombia. It is named after the country of Spain, whose government helped fund the project through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation. The library is noted for its architecture. Its three buildings are meant to resemble black stones that are illuminated at night. In 2008, the library park won an award for best architecture of the year in the Ibero-American Architecture and Urban Design Biennial (IAUB) in Lisbon. Manguinhos Library Park
Manguinhos Library Park ( pt, Biblioteca-Parque de Manguinhos) is a library and park complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The library opened on April 29, 2010. It contains over 25,000 books, 900 DVDs and 3 million songs, and also has a theatre that seats 200 people, a music room, classrooms, and a “Meu Bairro” ("My neighborhood") room created for community member meetings. It is located in Manguinhos, a favela in the neighborhood of Benfica. Benfica is in what is known as the "North Zone" of Rio de Janeiro. The creation of a "library park" complex was inspired by the library parks of Colombia, which were created as cultural projects in the less affluent neighborhoods of Medellín to promote social inclusion.
