Leafield Wireless Station
Leafield Technical Centre is a former radio communications station, now a motorsports centre of excellence, in the hamlet of Langley, in the western part of the village of Leafield in Oxfordshire, England. Radio communications station Experimental radio transmissions were begun on Crown Estate land at Leafield in 1912 by the Marconi Company on behalf of the General Post Office (GPO). From 1922 the site was the first link in the Imperial Wireless Chain, passing messages to and from Egypt which were priced per word. The station's aerials were strung from thirteen masts and it had its own coal-fired electricity generation. At some point after World War II the station became part of the GPO's Portishead Radio service, communicating with vessels at sea. Leafield Technical Centre - Geograph
Leafield is a village and civil parish about northwest of Witney in West Oxfordshire, England. The parish includes the hamlet of Langley, west of Leafield village. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 945. The village is above sea level in the Cotswold Hills. It was the highest point in Oxfordshire until the 1974 county boundary changes enlarged the county. Archaeology There are a number of tumuli in the parish, including Leafield Barrow, locally called Barry's Hill Tump, on top of the hill just to the north of the village. Leafield Barrow also has archaeological evidence for being the site of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle called Leafield Castle. The castle would be situated at a position in the village which would have given it a commanding view of the settlement. Hingham is a market town and civil parish in mid-Norfolk, England. The civil parish covers an area of and had a population of 2,078 in 944 households at the time of the 2001 United Kingdom census, 2001 census, increasing to 2,367 at the 2011 census.
