KDRI (AM)
KDRI (830 AM, "The Drive") is a radio station in Tucson, Arizona. Owned by Tucson Radio, LLC, it broadcasts a soft oldies format. It is simulcast on FM translator K269FV at 101.7 MHz in Oro Valley. KDRI is Arizona's only Primary Entry Point station to the Emergency Alert System. History A construction permit was issued in 1983 for a new station on 830 AM in Tucson to Doylan Forney. Forney had won the station, proposing to provide a middle-of-the-road music format "with an emphasis on spiritually enlightening programs", in a proceeding designed to promote ownership of radio stations by ethnic minorities. He first took the calls KGLY, then very soon after took the calls KGLR' when KGVY in Green Valley objected. In 1986, he sold the CP to Family Life Broadcasting, which had operated religious station KFLT at 1450 AM since 1977; Family Life then sold the 1450 frequency to another owner. Bobby R. Rich is a radio broadcaster, programmer and manager best known for his role as Program Director and Morning Show Host on KFMB-FM San Diego "B-100" (1975–79 and 1984–89) and KMXZ-FM Tucson, Arizona "MIX fm" (1993–2017). He began his radio career at age 14 in Ephrata, Washington as a DJ. While attending Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington he worked as a radio DJ in Spokane, Washington. His first Program Director position was at KSTT Davenport, Iowa. A novelty song is a type of song built upon some form of novel concept, such as a gimmick, a piece of humor, or a sample of popular culture. Novelty songs partially overlap with comedy songs, which are more explicitly based on humor, and with musical parody, especially when the novel gimmick is another popular song. Novelty songs achieved great popularity during the 1920s and 1930s. They had a resurgence of interest in the 1950s and 1960s. The term arose in Tin Pan Alley to describe one of the major divisions of popular music; the other two divisions were ballads and dance music. Stunting is a type of publicity stunt in radio broadcasting, where a station—abruptly and often without advance announcement—begins to air content that is seemingly uncharacteristic compared to what is normally played. Stunting is typically used to generate publicity and audience attention for upcoming changes to a station's programming, such as new branding, format, or as a soft launch for a newly-established station. Occasionally, a stunt may be purely intended as publicity or a protest, and not actually result in a major programming change. KTZR (1450 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station located in Tucson, Arizona. KTZR airs a sports format. Its studios are located north of downtown Tucson along Oracle Road, while the transmitter site is southeast of downtown. History For many years, the station played an oldies format that played rock and roll hits of the 1950s and 1960s as "Cool 1450". This station became "Funny 1450", as a comedy station, at 10AM on January 26, 2011; the last song on Cool was "Hello, Goodbye" by The Beatles. On November 28, 2011, KWFM changed their format to Spanish adult hits, branded as "La Preciosa 1450" under new calls, KTZR. On September 25, 2016, iHeartMedia announced that KTZR would flip to news/talk the following day.
