John Kenneth MacKenzie
John Kenneth MacKenzie (25 August 1850 – 1 April 1888) was an English medical missionary to China. He initially started his work through the London Missionary Society in Hankou (Hankow) in 1875. In Hankou, he treated patients in the London Missionary Society hospital, learned Chinese, and engaged in evangelism. The majority of the cases he treated were eye disease, opium addiction, and cases involving surgery. In 1878, MacKenzie transferred to Tianjin (Tientsin) due to the failing health of his wife. In Tianjin, MacKenzie constructed and ran a hospital with the help of the Viceroy's patronage and also established the Tientsin Medical School. MacKenzie also helped in the organisation of the Medical Missionary Association in China and the editing of the ''Medical Missionary Journal''. Kenneth Ivo Brownley Langwell Mackenzie (25 September 1913 – 19 January 1955) was an Australian poet and novelist. His first and best-known novel, ''The Young Desire It'' (1937), was published under the pen name Seaforth Mackenzie. Life Mackenzie was born in South Perth. He grew up in Pinjarra, Western Australia, and attended Guildford Grammar School. His experiences at Guildford in part inspired his novel of 1937 ''The Young Desire It''. His novel ''Dead Men Rising'' was about the Cowra breakout of which he had first hand experience, having been stationed there at the time of the event. He married Kate Bartlett (nee Loveday), in 1935. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1936, and son Hugh was born in 1938. His life in Sydney included involvement with the world of Norman Lindsay and Hugh McCrae and archival records show significant influence from them. Leucotome
A leucotome or McKenzie Leucotome is a surgical instrument used for performing leucotomies (also known as lobotomy) and other forms of psychosurgery. Invented by Canadian neurosurgeon Dr. Kenneth G. McKenzie in the 1940s, the leucotome has a narrow shaft which is inserted into the brain through a hole in the skull, and then a plunger on the back of the leucotome is depressed to extend a wire loop or metal strip into the brain. The leucotome is then rotated, cutting a core of brain tissue. This type was used by the Nobel prize-winning Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz. Another, different, surgical instrument also called a leucotome was introduced by Walter Freeman for use in the transorbital lobotomy. Sir Kenneth Smith Mackenzie, 6th Baronet (25 May 1832 - 9 February 1900) was a British diplomat, landowner and Lord Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty 1881-1899. Biography Mackenzie was the son of Sir Francis Mackenzie, 5th Baronet, and a descendant of the Lords Mackenzie of Kintail. He succeeded his father in 1843, and became 6th baronet and the 13th feudal baron of Gairloch. He was the hereditary owner of 170,000 acres of land in Ross-shire. He entered the diplomatic service, and was appointed an attaché at Washington in 1854. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ross-shire in 1881, and continued when that office was replaced by the Lord Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty in 1891 through the operation of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889. He served on the Napier Commission on the Condition of the Crofters and Cottars in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland in 1883 and 1884. He was chairman of the Ross-shire County Council from 1889. Kenneth John McKenzie (1926-1998) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. McKenzie was later an Administrator at the St. George Dragons. Playing career McKenzie joined St. George soon after his discharge from the Australian Army in 1946. He went on to play 95 games for Saints in all grades, was captain of Reserve Grade for many years and actually captained the First Grade team on 25 April 1952 in a game against Parramatta. He retired from football in 1952 after suffering recurring knee cartilage problems. Administrative career Upon retirement from playing, Ken McKenzie (who had a background in accountancy) became the club's Auditor and well as being selected on the club Committee. Kenneth McKenzie (fur Trader)
Kenneth McKenzie (aka Kenneth MacKenzie) (died 26 April 1861) was nicknamed the "King of the Missouri", for as a fur trader for American Fur Company in the upper Missouri River valley, he controlled a territory larger than most European nations. Background McKenzie was a Scot by birth, a Canadian immigrant as a teenager. He became a clerk for the North West Company, learning the fur business. Losing his job when his employer was merged into the Hudson's Bay Company, McKenzie traveled to St. Louis in 1822, applied for US citizenship and joined the Columbia Fur Company, heading it by the mid-1820s. While he was at fort union he married an Indian woman but later in his life he married a woman named Marry Marshal.
