''Friedenskantate'' (Peace Cantata) for soli, choir, organ and orchestra is a work by German composer Jörg Widmann. It was composed in 2023, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach taking office as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. It was premiered on 8 June 2023 by Thomaskantor Andreas Reize conducting Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Thomanerchor at Thomaskirche. History In 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed Thomaskantor in Leipzig. His inaugural cantata was ''Die Elenden sollen essen'', BWV 75. The cantatas theme is grave poverty, a serious problem of that time. Widmann took Bach's cantata and the Baroque form as starting point for his composition. The theme of the new composition is war, a contemporary subject. ''Kantate'' was commissioned by the Bach Archive Leipzig financed by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. A cantata (; ; literally "sung", past participle feminine singular of the Italian language, Italian verb ''cantare'', "to sing") is a vocal music, vocal Musical composition, composition with an musical instrument, instrumental accompaniment, typically in several movement (music), movements, often involving a choir. The meaning of the term changed over time, from the simple single-voice Madrigal (music), madrigal of the early 17th century, to the multi-voice "cantata da camera" and the "cantata da chiesa" of the later part of that century, from the more substantial dramatic forms of the 18th century to the usually sacred-texted 19th-century cantata, which was effectively a type of short oratorio. Cantatas for use in the liturgy of church services are called church cantata or sacred cantatas; other cantatas can be indicated as secular cantatas.
