Kalamaria Metro Station
Kalamaria (, ) is an under-construction metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 2. It is expected to enter service in 2025. The station gets its name from the area of Thessaloniki it serves, Kalamaria. It is a municipality making up the Thessaloniki urban area, and the name is a corruption of either the Medieval Greek Καλή Μεριά (''kali meria'', good side) or "Σκάλα Μεριά" (''skala meria'', port side). Kalamaria
Kalamariá (, ''Port Side'') is among the most densely populated suburbs in Thessaloniki, located about southeast of the downtown area, with a population of 92,248. History The area was first settled by humans in prehistoric times, and remains from that settlement have been found around the Mikro Emvolo cape. The name Kalamaria was first used in 1083 to denote the area southeast of Thessaloniki, including but not limited to the area of the present-day municipality. During the Byzantine and the Ottoman periods, the area was mostly uninhabited, except for a few fishing lodges. The first settlement was created in the early 1920s to house Asia Minor refugees from the Greek diaspora in Georgia and Asia Minor, who fled or were forcibly sent to Greece as a result of the Greco-Turkish War. Line 2 of the Thessaloniki Metro, also known as the Kalamaria Extension (), is a deep-level underground rapid transit line in Thessaloniki, Greece, connecting in the west with in the south-east. The section of the line between and stations was set to open in 2023, with the rest of the line becoming operational in 2024. This was delayed to opening in 2025, after inauguration of Line 1 the prior year. Of the line's 16 stations, 11 are also stops for Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1, as they will share tunnels.
