José Carlos Meirelles
José Carlos dos Reis Meirelles Júnior ( Ribeirão Preto, 1948) is a Brazilian that works for FUNAI, the agency that protects native Americans in Brazil. He is a specialist in uncontacted peoples. Early life Meirelles was born in Ribeirão Preto, in a family of explorers and cattle herders. He was raised in the small town of Santa Rita do Passa Quatro (São Paulo). When he was young, he gave up his studies in engineering and moved to the city of São Paulo. He took a course on indigenous studies and after a short introductory course, he was sent to Maranhão to work with the Urubu-Kaapor and then the Awá (Guajá), with whom first contact had been made. FUNAI Meirelles quit engineering in 1970 to work at FUNAI. In 1976, he became head of a FUNAI outpost in Acre, near the Iaco River. Uncontacted peoples are groups of indigenous peoples living without sustained contact with neighbouring communities and the world community. Groups who decide to remain uncontacted are referred to as indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation. Rio Envira is a river in Acre state in Brazil. The Rio Jaminauá is one of its tributaries. It is a tributary of the Tarauacá River. The river defines the northwest boundary of the Santa Rosa do Purus National Forest, a sustainable use conservation unit created in 2001. Sydney Ferreira Possuelo (born 19 April 1940, in Santos Dumont), is a Brazilian explorer, social activist and ethnographer who is considered the leading authority on Brazil's remaining isolated Indigenous Peoples. Life and career Sydney Possuelo started his career assisting the famous Villas Boas brothers with their work among indigenous peoples of the Xingu River area. Later he became the Director of the Department of Indigenous in Isolation (Departamento de Indios Isolados) at the FUNAI (National Indian Foundation of Brazil), doubling the surface size of officially designated Indigenous land in Brazil in only two years. Working in the most isolated areas in the Amazon region, Possuelo has led many expeditions, getting in contact with isolated tribes in Brazil, with the aim to protect them from outsiders.
