John Francis Murphy (December 11, 1853 – January 30, 1921) was an American Irish landscape painter. His style moved from poetic Tonalism to the innovative application of multiple layers of pigment, in order to create a sparse, brooding landscape, later in his career. Biography John Francis Murphy was born at Oswego, New York on December 11, 1853. His father, Martin Francis Murphy (1822-1899) had immigrated from Waterford to Oswego where he married Hannah Gregory (1839-1899). In 1870, he moved to Chicago and became a sign painter then moving to New York City in 1875 where he taught himself painting. In 1887, he built a studio in Arkville, New York and founded the Pakatakan Artist Colony. He first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1876, and was made an associate in 1885 and a full academician two years later. John Luttrell Murphy (1842 – February 27, 1912) was a justice of the Territorial Montana Supreme Court from 1871 to 1872, appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant. The appointment led to controversy, and the following year Grant withdrew the appointment, although sources are unclear as to whether Murphy was recalled or allowed to resign. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Murphy served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and obtained the rank of Major. In 1867, he passed the Tennessee Bar. John Murphy (1786 – September 21, 1841) was the fourth Governor of the U.S. state of Alabama, serving two terms from 1825 to 1829. Biography Early life John Murphy was born in 1786 in Robeson County, North Carolina. He attended South Carolina College, now the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of the Clariosophic Society. Among his classmates at South Carolina College were John Gayle and James Dellet. Gayle also became Governor of Alabama while Dellet became a U.S. Congressman from Alabama. Murphy graduated in 1808. Career He became a clerk at the South Carolina Senate. He was a trustee for the University of South Carolina from 1808 to 1818. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Murphy became a Liberal party candidate for the Annapolis Valley—Hants electoral district in the 1988 federal election. He lost to Progressive Conservative candidate Pat Nowlan. His second attempt for the riding succeeded in 1993 as he defeated incumbent Nowlan (now an independent) and new Progressive Conservative candidate Jim White. John Joseph Murphy Former Mayor of St. John’s, NL (September 24, 1922 – December 15, 2010 ) was a businessman and politician, and the 11th mayor of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Born the son of John Murphy and Gertrude Wadden in St. John's, Newfoundland, he was educated at Saint Bonaventure's College. John Joseph Murphy (May 13, 1849 – August 4, 1938) was a businessman and politician. He represented Harbour Main in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1908 to 1913 as a People's Party member. In 1869, he became manager of the Greenspond branch of the firm Ridley and Sons. From 1871 to 1876, Murphy operated his own fishery supply business. John Murphy (1821 – 24 June 1883) was an English-born Australian politician. He migrated to New South Wales around 1843 and became a pastoralist. On 22 February 1855 he married Mary Albon, with whom he had six children. By 1866 he owned Kybean station in the Monaro district. In 1877 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Monaro, but he did not re-contest in 1880. John Alphonsus Murphy (February 26, 1881 – November 29, 1935) was an American drummer serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Boxer Rebellion who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Murphy was born February 26, 1881, in New York City, New York and enlisted into the Marine Corps from Washington, D.C. January 5, 1897. After entering the Marine Corps he was sent to fight in the Chinese Boxer Rebellion. He received the Medal for his actions in Peking, China from July 21-August 17, 1900 and it was presented to him December 11, 1901.
