	John Aird (Lord Provost) John Aird (John Aird Junior) (1655–1730) was a Scottish merchant who served as Lord Provost of Glasgow five times (ten years in total). Life Aird was born in 1655, the son of John Aird. In 1692 Aird appears as a Bailie in Glasgow Town Council and from 1695 he appears as Dean of Guild in the Council. He served as Dean five times in total up to 1721. He served as Lord Provost five times: 1705–1707, 1709–1711, 1713–1715, 1717–1719 and 1721–1723. In the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 Aird and the city sided strongly with the new government, rather than the Jacobite "rebels", and Aird raised an army of 600 volunteers to defend the city against Jacobite capture. 	Sir John Aird, 1st Baronet Sir John Aird, 1st Baronet (3 December 1833 – 6 January 1911) was an English civil engineering contractor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He also served as Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Paddington North from 1887 to 1906, was the first Mayor of Paddington in 1900, and became an enthusiastic collector of British art. Early life Aird was the son of a former mason – also called John Aird (1806–1876) – who was superintendent of the Phoenix Gas Company's gasworks in Greenwich, south-east London before setting up his own contracting business, John Aird & Co., in 1848. 	John Aird (banker) Sir John Aird (November 15, 1855 – November 30, 1938) was a Canadian banker. Born at Longueuil in Canada East (now Quebec), he joined the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1878. He became president of the bank in 1924 and held that position until 1929. Aird Commission A number of problems had arisen during 1920s, causing debates on how broadcasting should be managed. 	John Black Aird John Black Aird (May 5, 1923 – May 6, 1995) was a Canadian lawyer, corporate director and political figure. He served in the Senate of Canada from 1964 to 1974, and he was Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1980 to 1985. Life and career Aird was born in Toronto, Ontario, and was the grandson of Sir John Aird, a prominent Canadian banker. He was educated at Upper Canada College, Trinity College and Osgoode Hall Law School. Aird was a Brother at the Toronto Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi. During World War II, Aird served in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. In July 1944, he married Lucille “Jane” Housser. 	Jock Aird John Rae Aird (18 December 1926 – 14 June 2021) was a footballer who played for both the Scotland and New Zealand national sides. Life and career Born in Glencraig, Fife, Aird started his professional career with Burnley, whom he joined from Perth junior side Jeanfield Swifts in 1948. A feisty but consistent left-back, he earned international recognition towards the end of his seven-season spell at Turf Moor, making his Scotland debut against Norway in May 1954, at the age of 28. He was then selected in the squad for the upcoming World Cup finals and was one of only 13 players who actually travelled to Switzerland, the SFA opting not to use the full complement of 22 permitted.
