James Wright (poet)
James Arlington Wright (December 13, 1927 – March 25, 1980) was an American poet. Life James Wright was born and spent his childhood in Martins Ferry, Ohio. His father worked in a glass factory, and his mother in a laundry. Neither parent had received more than an eighth grade education. Wright suffered a nervous breakdown in 1943, and he graduated a year late from high school, in 1946. After graduating from high school, Wright enlisted in the U.S. Army and participated in the occupation of Japan. Following his discharge, he attended Kenyon College on the GI Bill, studied with John Crowe Ransom, and published poems in the Kenyon Review. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1952. That year, Wright married Liberty Kardules, another Martins Ferry native. Wright subsequently spent a year in Vienna on a Fulbright Fellowship, returning to the U.S. where he obtained a master's and a Ph.D. at the University of Washington, studying with Theodore Roethke and Stanley Kunitz. James Wright (palaeontologist)
James Wright FRSE FGS (1878–1957) was a Scottish merchant remembered primarily as a palaeontologist, geologist and fossil collector. He was an expert on the Lower Carboniferous crinoids of Scotland. Life He was born in Kirkcaldy in Fife on 8 July 1878, the son of a relatively affluent furniture dealer in the town. He was educated locally at Kirkcaldy Burgh School and joined his father's firm aged around 14 or 15. It was later renamed Wright & Son. On his father's death in 1917 he took over the company as Director. He retired in 1930 and in 1934 moved to Edinburgh. In 1933 he had been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh due to his scientific contributions to the field of palaeontology. His proposers were Sir Edward Battersby Bailey, Murray Macgregor, John Pringle and George Walter Tyrrell. He won the Society's Neill Prize for the period 1937-39. He died on 28 January 1957. James Earl Wright (March 27, 1939 – February 26, 2009) was an American professional football player who was a defensive back and quarterback in the American Football League (AFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the Memphis Tigers. Early life and high school Wright was born and grew up in Columbus, Mississippi. He attended Stephen D. Lee High School, where he lettered in baseball, football and track. College career Wright attended Memphis State University and was the Tigers' starting quarterback for three seasons. As a senior, ''Time'' referred to Wright as "the most dangerous back in the South". James Earl Wright (born December 31, 1991) is a former American football wide receiver. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at LSU. Professional career Cincinnati Bengals Wright was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round (239th overall) of the 2014 NFL draft. James Egerton Lowndes Wright (10 May 1912 – 14 January 1987) was an English cricketer. Wright was a right-handed batsman. He was born at London. Educated at Winchester College, he progressed from the college cadet force to enlist in the London Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1935 he gained promotion to Lieutenant in the same regiment. In 1937, Wright made a single first-class appearance for the Free Foresters against Oxford University at the University Parks. In a match which Oxford University won by ten wickets, Wright batted twice, scoring 48 runs in the Free Foresters first-innings before being dismissed by Bill Murray-Wood, while in their second-innings he was dismissed for a duck by David Macindoe. He died at Ashford Hill, Hampshire on 14 January 1987. His father Egerton Wright also played first-class cricket. James Wright (25 March 1874 – 20 August 1961) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1898 and 1905. Wright was born at Newbold, Leicestershire, the son of Thomas Wright, a coal miner and his wife Elizabeth. In 1881 they were living at Castle Gresley, Derbyshire. Wright made his debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire in the 1898 season when he scored 2 and 1. However in the next match, a Derbyshire victory over Hampshire, he made 53 not out. He played a total of five matches in the 1898 season. He played one more game for the club in the 1905 season. Wright was a right-hand batsman and played ten innings in six first-class matches with an average of 10.33 and a top score of 53 not out. He bowled nine overs but took no wickets. He was also an occasional wicket-keeper. James Clifton Wright (born December 21, 1950) is a former professional baseball pitcher. He played two seasons in Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox in 1978-79. Wright was born in Reed City, Michigan. Career Wright was drafted out of high school by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft. He spent several years working his way up through their minor league organization, primarily as a starting pitcher. His breakthrough came in 1977 with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, where he went 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA. Wright made the Red Sox out of spring training in 1978 and went on to pitch 3 shutouts in 24 games (16 of them starts) as a rookie.
