Jersey General Election, 2011
The 2011 Jersey general election was held on 19 October 2011 to elect 45 members of the States Assembly. This was the first time Senators, Deputies and Constables were elected on a single day in Jersey. The number of members of the States of Jersey was reduced from 53 to 51. Six Senators who had been elected in 2008 for a period of six years did not face election in 2011. Nominations Nominations for candidates took place on 6 September at the Town Hall, St Helier, Jersey for the four Senatorial seats and at each parish hall on 7 September for the twelve Constable and twenty nine Deputy seats. States Assembly
The States Assembly (french: Assemblée des États; Jèrriais: ) is the parliament of Jersey, formed of the island's 37 deputies and the Connétable of each of the twelve parishes. The origins of the legislature of Jersey lie in the system of self-government according to Norman law guaranteed to the Channel Islands by John, King of England, following the division of Normandy in 1204. The States Assembly has exercised uncontested legislative powers since 1771, when the concurrent law-making power of the Royal Court of Jersey was abolished. The Assembly passes and amends laws and regulations; approves the annual budget and taxation; appoints the chief minister, ministers and members of various committees and panels; debates matters proposed by the Council of Ministers, by individual States Members or by one of the committees or panels. Terry Le Main
Terry Le Main (born November 1939) is a former Jersey politician. Biography Terence John Le Main was born in November 1939 in Jersey. He was educated at Hautlieu Grammar School. Electoral history He was first elected to the States of Jersey as Deputy of Saint Helier No. 2 in 1978 (re-elected 1984). He was elected as Senator in 1994 and re-elected in 1990. In the 1996 Senatorial election he was ousted in 7th place with 9,578 votes. He then successfully stood for election is his former Deputorial seat in St Helier No. 2 in 1996, topping the poll with 669 votes, and topped the poll again in 1999 (782 votes) and was re-elected in 2002. He stood again as Senator in 2005 and was returned to the Senatorial benches in 4th place with 12,159 votes. Geoff Southern
Geoff Southern is a Jersey politician, and former teacher. He has been a deputy in the States of Jersey since winning a by-election, on 15 February 2002, and has chaired two scrutiny panels. Biography Southern was born in Manchester. He graduated from the University of Surrey with a BSc (Hons) Metallurgy and French and had a career as a school teacher at Hautlieu School Jersey and as a homeless support worker. He is a former president of the Jersey branch of the National Union of Teachers. He is a fan of the American singer-songwriter Tom Waits. Paul Le Claire
Paul Vincent Le Claire (born 1963) is a Jersey politician who was a member of the States of Jersey from 1999 to 2011. He represented the Saint Helier District No.1 constituency and between 1999 and 2005 had an island-wide mandate as a senator. Biography He was born in 1963 in Jersey. Electoral history Le Claire first stood in a by-election for a vacant senatorial seat in a by-election held in February 1999, coming second to Jerry Dorey with 1,811 votes. In a subsequent by-election in April 1999, he was, however, successful in gaining one of the three seats as a deputy for St Helier No.1 District.
