Jean Gilles (French Army Officer)
Jean Marcellin Joseph Calixte Gilles (14 October 1904 – 10 August 1961) was a French Army general. He was born in Perpignan, France on 14 October 1904. His father, Joseph Gilles, was killed in the First World War. Early life At age 12, Jean enrolled in a military school and at age 18, entered the renowned Saint-Cyr Military Academy, where he lost an eye in a training accident, replacing it with one made of glass. On leaving school he was assigned to 24e régiment de tirailleurs sénégalais (24th Regiment Senegalese Infantry) and took part in the Rif War in northern Morocco, where he received his first citation, and the Medal of Alfonso XIII of Spain. He served as a Camel Corps officer until leaving Morocco with the rank of captain in 1938. Perpignan
Perpignan (, , ; ca, Perpinyà ; es, Perpiñán ; it, Perpignano ) is the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Orientales department in southern France, in the heart of the plain of Roussillon, at the foot of the Pyrenees a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea and the scrublands of the Corbières massif. It is the centre of the Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole metropolitan area. 9th Colonial Infantry Division
The 9th Colonial Infantry Division (french: 9e Division d'Infanterie Coloniale, 9e DIC) was a French Army formation which fought in World War II and the War in Vietnam (1945–1946). History A 9th Colonial Infantry Division was being formed in June 1940, but the formation wasn't finished when France surrendered after the Battle of France. After the liberation of French North Africa, the division was created in July 1943 from Colonial units from French West Africa and Morocco. Many escapees from France who had reached North Africa via Spain joined the division. But at that time, the 9th DIC was mostly made up of Africans from all the territories of French West Africa. The Divsion saw its first action when it was tasked with the Invasion of Elba from Corsica on 17 June 1944.
