James Gray (Australian Politician)
James Gray (1820 – 21 January 1889) was an Australian politician. Gray was born in Ballybay in County Monaghan in 1820. In 1843 he was found guilty of subornation to perjury and transported to Tasmania, where he arrived in 1844. He received his ticket of leave in 1847 and became a free man in 1853. In 1872 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. James Lorne Gray
James Lorne Gray, (March 2, 1913 – March 2, 1987) was a Canadian administrator and President of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) from 1958 to 1974. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, he received a B. Eng in 1935 and a M.Sc. (Mech. Eng.) in 1938 from the University of Saskatchewan. In 1939, he was a lecturer in engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. During World War II, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force achieving the rank of Wing Commander. After the war from 1945 to 1946, he was associate director-general in the research and development division of the department of Reconstruction and Supply in Ottawa. From 1946 to 1948, he was with Montreal Armature Works Limited. In 1948, he was the scientific assistant to the President of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). James Gray (goldsmith)
James Gray was a Scottish goldsmith working in Edinburgh during the reigns of Mary, Queen of Scots and James VI of Scotland. Gray is known for the "Galloway mazer", a gilt cup now held by the National Museums of Scotland. He also engraved the brass plate for the tomb of Regent Moray (died 1570) in St Giles, Edinburgh. He was a burgess of the Canongate. James Gray and the carpenter Andrew Mansioun were among the elders of the kirk of the Canongate in August 1567. Gray sold pearls to Mary, Queen of Scots and refashioned and mended a basin and laver for her. He also worked for the royal mint as a "sinker" or engraver of dies. Sir James Gray, 1st Baronet, of Denne Hill, East Kent, (7 March 1667 – 27 October 1722), was an armiger, and a merchant- burgess of Edinburgh, who later managed the affairs in London of James Graham, 1st Duke of Montrose. James Gray was a trader in leather, wine, wool and grain. He is said to have also been a "boxkeeper" and then footman to King James II. From a packet of letters in his own hand (now in the National Archives of Scotland) he managed the affairs in London of the Duke of Montrose, amongst others. In one letter dated 1701 he wrote to the Duke of being kept busy by having to attend Parliament (House) "every morning and every evening". He was created a Baronet by Queen Anne at Kensington Palace on 5 March 1707, the day before the Act of Union was given Royal Assent. Sir James Gray, (14 October 1891, London – 14 December 1975, Cambridge, England) was a British zoologist who helped establish the field of cell biology, cytology. Gray was also known for his work in animal locomotion and the development of experimental zoology. He is known for Gray's Paradox concerning dolphin locomotion. Career and research Gray was born in London and graduated from King's College, Cambridge, in 1913. After serving in World War I, he returned to King's College in 1919. He was Professor of Zoology, Cambridge University, from 1937 to 1954, and president of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, Marine Biological Association from 1945 to 1955. James Gray (c. 1770 – 1830) was a Scottish educator, poet and linguist. While master of the high school of Dumfries, he became a friend of Robert Burns, later teaching his children. He later held posts at the high school of Edinburgh and the Belfast Academy. He then took orders in the Church of Ireland, serving as a chaplin for the East India Company in Kutch and serving as tutor to the young Rao or Prince of that province, Deshalji II. Life Gray was originally master of the high school of Dumfries, and there became good friends with Robert Burns. From 1801 till 1822 he was master in the high school of Edinburgh. In 1822 he became Headmaster of the Belfast Academy. Gray subsequently took orders in the Church of Ireland and in 1826 went out to India as chaplain in the East India Company's service at Bombay. James Gordon Gray (1876 – 6 November 1934) was a Scottish mathematician and physicist. Life Grey was born in Glasgow in 1876, the third of eight children of Annie Gordon and Andrew Gray. He was educated at Friars Grammar School, in Bangor, Caernarvonshire, Wales, where his father was employed by the university. He attended the University College of North Wales until 1899, when his father and family moved back to Glasgow. He studied engineering at the University of Glasgow, graduating with a BScEng. From 1904, he was employed at a physics lecturer at the University, and received a doctorate (DSc) in 1908. During World War I he assisted with naval and aerial defence. From 1920 to 1934 he was professor of applied physics at the University of Glasgow. In 1909 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
