Jamaica At The 2011 World Championships In Athletics
Jamaica competed at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics from August 27 to September 4 in Daegu, South Korea. Team selection A team of 51 athletes was announced to represent the country in the event. The team is led by Olympic gold medalists and defending or former world champions Usain Bolt, Melaine Walker, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Veronica Campbell-Brown. Because only the names of the athletes were published, the assignment of athletes to events is tentatively due to this year's performances. Publication of the entry list solves this problem. Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) is the national governing body for the sport of athletics (including track and field, long-distance running and racewalking) in Jamaica. The association is based in Kingston. As of December 2020, the president of the association is Garth Gayle, JP. He succeeded Dr. Warren Blake who was elected interim president in November 2011 after the sudden death of Blake's predecessor Howard Aris, and re-elected in November 2012. The objects of the association are to promote, develop and regulate amateur athletics in Jamaica. The JAAA aims to provide instruction and teaching of athletics to teachers, coaches, instructors and athletes. It organises competitions and events in Jamaica whilst laying down rules and regulations and providing rewards to winners. 2011 World Championships In Athletics – Men's 4 × 100 Metres Relay
The Men's 4 × 100 metres relay event at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on 4 September. USA won the first semi-final with deliberate handoffs, setting the world leader. France followed them into the final. The second semi-final was won by Trinidad and Tobago, ahead of favored Jamaica. Saint Kitts and Nevis set their national record in making the time qualifier in third. The third semi-final was much closer as Great Britain led Poland, with Italy making the final time qualifier. In the final, Nesta Carter put Jamaica out into the lead, but Justin Gatlin ran down Michael Frater to put the USA even with Jamaica. On the third leg, Yohan Blake again edged Jamaica into the lead. Yohan Blake
Yohan Blake (born 26 December 1989) is a Jamaican sprinter specialising in the 100-metre and 200-metre sprint races. He won gold at the 100 m at the 2011 World Athletics Championships as the youngest 100 m world champion ever, and a silver medal in the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the 100 m and 200 m races for the Jamaican team behind Usain Bolt. Schillonie Calvert (born 27 July 1988) is a Jamaican sprinter who specializes in the 100 metres. She made the 4x100 relay team for Jamaica as a reserve for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She did not participate at the 2012 Worlds. She ran in the 4 × 100 m heat with the Jamaican team at the 2012 London Olympics which later went on to take silver in the finals. Aileen Bailey
Aleen May Bailey (born 25 November 1980) is a retired Jamaican track and field sprinter who competed in the 100 metres and 200 m. Career She competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics and won the gold medal as a member of the 4 × 100 m relay team. Bailey trains in Columbia, South Carolina under Curtis Frye and is the sister of the reggae star Capleton. Bailey graduated from the University of South Carolina, where she competed during her Junior and Senior season after transferring from Barton County Community College. In the 2003 NCAA Outdoor track and field championships, Bailey won the 100 and 200 meters, both times defeating heavily favored Muna Lee of LSU. The Women's 100 metres at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on August 27, 28 and 29. Prior to the championships, American Carmelita Jeter held the fastest time of the year (10.70 seconds) and the 2009 bronze medalist entered the competition as the second fastest woman of all-time. Veronica Campbell-Brown, the 2007 champion, was the next fastest athlete (10.76) and the only woman to have beaten Jeter that year. The reigning world and Olympic champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was also in contention, although her preparations were affected by injury. Marshevet Myers, Kerron Stewart, and Kelly-Ann Baptiste were ranked in the top five for the 100 m before the race.
