Jackson Preparatory School (Mississippi)
Jackson Preparatory School (Jackson Prep) is an independent, coeducational, day school enrolling 700 students in grades five through twelve. The school is located in Flowood, Mississippi, a suburb of Jackson, and has a controversial history as a segregation academy. History The school was founded in 1970 as a segregation academy. A biography of James Meredith cited the school's creation as part of the campaign of massive resistance against the Brown v. Board of Education decision ordering racial integration of public schools. At the time of its founding, a local member of the White Citizen's Council remarked that schools like Jackson Prep were established because the "educational results of such forced interracial congregation are disastrous for children of both the white and black races". A 1973 ''Yale Law Journal'' article characterized Jackson Prep as "second generation segregation academy" since the student body lacked both black and low income white students, but unlike so ...

Jackson Public School District
The Jackson Public School District (JPSD) or Jackson Public Schools (JPS) is a public school district serving the majority of Jackson, the state capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Mississippi. Established in 1888, it is the second largest and only urban school district in the state. History Jackson schools integrated by law as per ''Derek Jerome Singleton vs. the Jackson Public School District'', decided in 1969. In 1969, 47% of the students were black. The enrollment declined by 5,000 students between the fall semester of 1969 and February 1, 1970, due to white flight. In fall 1970 the percentage of black students was now 61. A 1969 school bond proposed by the district failed as voters of all races were unsure what would happen as a result of integration; this was the first JPS bond that was not approved by voters. By 1994 the district's student body was 85% black. Initially the Parents for Public Schools Jackson (PPSJ) focused on efforts for the district to retain mi ...

Booster Club
Booster clubs are organizations in schools at the high school and university level. The clubs are generally run and organized by the parents of the students in the supported organization in high schools, and by athletic supporters and fans at colleges. It is not a social club. Its main function is to develop support for the student program and raise funds to supplement shrinking public support as a result of budget cuts. They are called " Parents and Citizens Clubs" in Australian schools. For example, fundraisers are often held to raise money for supplies or equipment that the students may need or for trips that the students may need to take. The main principle of funding by a U.S. IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit is that the booster club may not discriminate in making grants to youth or college students on the basis of their family's membership in or funding to the club, or the family's fund-raising or time put into club activities. A popular way for booster clubs to raise money is w ...

Bill Waller
William Lowe Waller Sr. (October 21, 1926 – November 30, 2011) was an American politician and attorney. A Democrat, Waller served as the Governor of Mississippi from 1972 to 1976. Born near Oxford, Mississippi to a farming family, Waller went to law school and in 1950 established a law practice in Jackson. Nine years later, he was elected District Attorney of Hinds County, Mississippi. Waller attempted to reform the position and provoked the ire of local law enforcement for aggressively prosecuting several cases. In 1964, he twice prosecuted Byron De La Beckwith for the murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers, with both trials resulting in deadlocked juries. In 1967, he launched an unsuccessful campaign for governor, finishing fifth in the Democratic primary. Waller ran for governor again in 1971, denouncing state establishment leaders and winning in the primary and in the general election. Taking office in January 1972, he associated himself with the New South gove ...
