Charles Andrews (New York Judge)
Charles Andrews (May 27, 1827October 22, 1918) was an American lawyer and politician. He was Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals from 1881 to 1882 and from 1892 to 1897. Life He was the son of George and Polly Andrews. He was educated at Cazenovia Seminary and then studied law at Syracuse, New York. He was admitted to the bar in 1849. On May 17, 1855, he married Marcia A. Shankland (1832–1921), and their son was William Shankland Andrews. Charles Andrews was District Attorney of Onondaga County from 1854 to 1856. He was Mayor of Syracuse, New York from 1861 to 1862, and in 1868. He was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1867, and to the 1868 Republican National Convention. George Andrews (judge)
George Andrews (December 28, 1826 – August 22, 1889) was a justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1868 to 1870. Born in Vermont, Andrews was appointed to the Tennessee Supreme Court by Governor William G. Brownlow in 1868. Andrews was one of the judges serving on the highly partisan "apocryphal" court, which was in place in Tennessee between the end of the American Civil War and the enactment of the Constitution of 1870. The justices who served on this court "without exception, were bitter partisans" who "had all been Union men, and... took the partisan view of all questions growing out of the war". Of this group, Andrews is described as one of only two "who were men of talent, and were good lawyers", the other being Samuel Milligan. He later served as the United States attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennessee. Lorrin Andrews
Lorrin Andrews (April 29, 1795 – September 29, 1868) was an early American missionary to Hawaii and a judge. He opened the first post-secondary school for Hawaiians called Lahainaluna Seminary, prepared a Hawaiian dictionary and several works on the literature and antiquities of the Hawaiians. His students published the first newspaper, and were involved in the first case of counterfeiting currency in Hawaii. He later served as a judge and became a member of Hawaii's first Supreme Court. Life Lorrin Andrews was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, on April 29, 1795. He graduated from Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, and attended Princeton Theological Seminary. He married Mary Ann Wilson from Washington, Kentucky on August 16, 1827. Richard Bullock Andrews (11 May 1823 – 26 June 1884) was an Australian politician and judge. Early life Richard Bullock Andrews was born in Epping, Essex, England the eldest child of Richard Bullock Andrews, an attorney, and his wife Emma Ann. From December 1839 Bullock worked in his father's solicitors business. On 15 August 1846 he married Elizabeth Holtaway (29 August 1818 – 15 February 1906), daughter of a solicitor. Andrews emigrated to South Australia, arriving there 14 December 1852 aboard the steamship ''Sydney''. In 1853 he was appointed a notary public, on 3 May 1853 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of South Australia. He practised in the Local Court at Mount Barker, South Australia and then set up an office in Adelaide. William Drennan Andrews
William Drennan Andrews PC (18321924) was an Irish judge who served for many years as the Probate Judge. He was the uncle of Sir James Andrews, 1st Baronet, the Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, (whose career he did much to foster), J. M. Andrews, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland and Thomas Andrews, architect of the ''Titanic''. There is a sympathetic sketch of his character in ''The Old Munster Circuit'' by Maurice Healy. He was a grandson of William Drennan, the United Irishman leader, and his wife Sarah Swanwick. William Shankland Andrews
William Shankland Andrews (September 25, 1858 – August 5, 1936) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Early life and education He was the son of New York Appellate Judge Charles Andrews, the husband of Mary Raymond Shipman, and the great-grandfather of Nancy Andrews, an American biologist. After completing studies at St. John's Academy, Manlius, New York, where he was Head Boy in 1872, Andrews graduated from Harvard College in 1880, received his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School in 1882. Career He returned to Syracuse, where he joined the firm Knapp, Nottingham & Andrews, working there until 1899, when he was nominated by the Republican Party to serve as the New York Supreme Court Justice in the 5th Judicial District.
