Beryl Howell
Beryl Alaine Howell (born December 3, 1956) is an American attorney and jurist who serves as a senior United States district judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She was appointed to the District of Columbia federal court in 2010 by President Barack Obama, and she served as its chief judge from 2016 to 2023. As chief judge, she supervised federal grand juries in the district, including for the Mueller special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections and investigations into attempts to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election. Early life and education Howell was born in 1956 in Fort Benning. She is the daughter of an U.S. Army officer. She attended elementary and secondary school in six states and Germany. David Howell (January 1, 1747 – July 30, 1824) was a Delegate to the Congress of the Confederation from Rhode Island, an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Rhode Island, Attorney General of Rhode Island and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. Education and career Born on January 1, 1747, in Morristown, Morris County, Province of New Jersey, British America, Howell attended Eaton's Academy in Hopewell, Province of New Jersey, then graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1766 and received an Artium Magister degree in 1769 from Rhode Island College (now Brown University). George Evan Howell (September 21, 1905 – January 18, 1980) was a United States representative from Illinois and judge of the United States Court of Claims. Education and career Born in Marion, Illinois, Howell attended the public schools at Villa Grove, Illinois. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois College of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1927, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and from the University of Illinois College of Law with a Bachelor of Laws in 1930. He taught school at Harvard High School in McHenry County, Illinois, in 1927 and 1928.
