John Eardley Inglis
Major General Sir John Eardley Wilmot Inglis (15 November 1814 – 27 September 1862) was a British Army officer, best known for his role in protecting the British compound for 87 days in the siege of Lucknow. Military career In 1833 he joined the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot, in which all his regimental service was passed. In 1837 he saw active service in Canada in the Lower Canada Rebellion, including the actions at St. Denis and St. Eustache. During the Second Anglo-Sikh War, in 1848 to 1849 in the Punjab, he was in command at the Siege of Multan and at the Battle of Gujrat. In 1857, on the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny, he was in command of his regiment at Lucknow. John C. Inglis III is an American politician that represents the 38th district of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat since 2024. Biography The son of a teacher, prior to his election to the state house he worked for 15 years as a teacher and school counselor for the West Mifflin Area School District, and was a proud member of the American Federation of Teachers. Inglis stated that he became interested in running when he started to get more involved in extracurricular activities, and in 2017 he won a seat to the West Mifflin Borough Council. Vice-Admiral John Inglis (20 March 1743 – 11 March 1807) was a Royal Navy officer who served at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797. Life Inglis was born on 20 March 1743 in Philadelphia, the eldest son of John Inglis, a Scottish merchant settled in the British Colonies in America, and his wife, Catherine McCall. He was baptized some time in the month of September 1744 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1757, during the Seven Years' War, he joined as a volunteer. He left HMS Garland after less than three months in order to travel to England to join the newly built under Captain John Elliot. Elliot's brother, Andrew, was married to John's aunt, Eleanor McCall. John Inglis and Company was a Canadian manufacturing firm which made weapons for the United Kingdom and British Commonwealth military forces during the World War II era, then later became a major appliance manufacturer. Whirlpool Corporation acquired control of Inglis in 1987 and changed the company's name to Whirlpool Canada in 2001. Today the Inglis name survives as a brand under Whirlpool. History The company traces its roots to John Inglis who was involved in early enterprises in Dundas and Guelph, Ontario. On 27 July 1859, he, Thomas Mair and Francis Evatt formed Mair, Inglis and Evatt, a machine shop in Guelph, Ontario, that produced machinery for grist and flour mills. In 1864, they added a steam engine to power the machines. Some time after 1864, Daniel Hunter replaced Thomas Mair, and the name of the business was changed to Inglis and Hunter.

John Forbes David Inglis (5 August 1820 – 13 March 1894) was an East India Company civil servant, who became Chief Commissioner of Oudh in North India. His disagreement with Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton, Lord Lytton's Afghan policy led to him being passed over for an expected promotion to be Governor of North West Province. He took early retirement and on his return to Edinburgh, he founded, jointly with his daughter Elsie Inglis, the Scottish Association for the Medical Education of Women. That association established the Edinburgh Medical College for Women at a time that women were not accepted into British university medical schools. John Alexander Inglis of Auchendinny and Redhall FRSE KC LLB (1873–1941) was a Scottish landowner, advocate and historian. He specialised in family histories of Scotland’s gentry. Life He was born at Montpelier Lawn in Cheltenham in England on 3 February 1873 into a Scottish family. He was the eldest son of Alexander Inglis (1830-1899) of Auchendinny and Redhall: two large estates on the south-west of Edinburgh. John Inglis (1762–1834) was a Scottish minister of the Church of Scotland. He served as minister of Greyfriars Kirk and was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1804. Life He was born in 1762 in the manse at Forteviot the youngest son of Mary Bryce and her husband, Rev Harry Inglis, the local minister. He studied Theology at the University of Edinburgh and was licensed to preach in September 1785 by the Presbytery of Perth. He found a patron and was ordained in Tibbermore church in July 1786.
