James Carlton (athlete)
James Andrew Carlton (10 February 1909 – 4 April 1951) was an Australian sprinter. He competed in 100yd and 220yd events at the 1928 Summer Olympics, and was eliminated in quarter finals. Schoolboy star Carlton was born in South Lismore and was educated at Marist Brothers schools in Lismore, Darlinghurst Sydney and then at St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill where he was a schoolboy and GPS sprint champion. In both years 1925 and 1926 he won the New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association 120 handicap yd handicap event, the Catholic schools championship and the New South Wales junior title. In his three senior years at the St Joseph's College from 1925 to 1927 he set GPS records in the 440yds (three successive records and three victories); the 220yds (two successive records and three victories) and the 100yds (one record and three victories). Early life Carlton was born in Sydney and earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney.
